Depends what you mean by 'work smart', do you mean work smart in the European sense - automate the f*** out of everything possible and do as little pointless work as possible? Yes, everytime.
Your expression here (work tricky), YYZ, is unfortunately all too common ... but that's life. And yes, I think it's universal (though I think it is seen more frequently in China).
What worked pretty well for me...Work hard, work smart and outsmart the "tricksters" (the "politicians"?).
Work hard but always keep your eyes and ears open for other opportunities and don't give staying where you are a second thought should they arise. There is no benefit to being loyal to a company or boss because they will replace you outsourced labor without guilt just to save a bit of cash. This happened to me in America and I'd be willing to be it translates well into most countries especially China.
