Chinese people now disrespecting the West?

I was just reading this bbc article about the perceived slide of US power (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-12209538) and read this quote;' "People are now looking down on the West, from leadership circles, to academia, to everyday folks," by Professor Kang Xiaoguang of Renmin University.
Having been away from China for a few years, I was just wondering if you had noticed this in everyday life.
Is there a new lack of respect for foreigners or Westerners?

Re: Chinese people now disrespecting the West?

"Grant that I seek to understand, rather than be understood."--St. Francis of Assissi. Why is it that Westerners (with the exception of St. Francis) have this deep seated need for the rest of the world to suck their a-s-a?

All people tend to think that their culture/their group/their mindset is superior, not just the west. You see it everywhere (including in your statement I quoted above) It's human nature. With the exception of the idea that the west is superior.. that's clearly just plain ol' fact.

Re: Chinese people now disrespecting the West?

Not look down on, he didn't phrase it right. It's more like not kiss their asses as much as before I guess.
The academia part is kind of true, a few years back if you got a professor from an American university to give a speech in a Chinese university, he could be anyone from any university, plus the best accommodations, but now most universities in big cities wouldn't even consider if you're not from an ivy league school. This applies to universities in big cities.
You notice the change a little here and there.

Well that just isn't true at all.

I find this issue rather futile.. "treat your neighbor as you want to be treated yourself" is what matters. The rest is irrelevant. I.m.o. ! Smile

A few years ago, American universities didn't give a sh*t about the Chinese student market, Chinese students would almost go to whatever school they could get in, so the shools almost would welcome any educational/cultural exchange
activities. But now they realize that they make a lot of money from Chinese students, they all want to participate and that created a lot more choices for the demanding, so the Chinese universities have the say now.

And also, isn't it true that it's not as easy to get a working visa for you English teachers who wants to teach in a relatively decent company? It was so easy, all you needed to be was just a foreign looking thing with the ability of pronouncing hello nice to meet you correctly. No offense, a lot of you are actually good at teaching. But now at least on paper you have to have a bachelor s degree and 2 years of working experience.

Re: Chinese people now disrespecting the West?

All I'm saying is that the changes are there. Chinese people might still make you feel superior, but in a lot of ways, it's changing. I don't see it's disrespect, it's just becoming a little more normal, cause nobody should feel superior because of their nationalities and nobody should treat people a certain way because of their nationalities.

envy?? some people are envy, but I think its normal no matter where.

emmm...while such people who are envy are not so intelligent! why envy? envy makes people be painful and horrible in inner heart! envy is useless, can not do or change anything and makes you unhappy! Whew!

why choose envy? idiot can choose envy, find troubles to themselves. and waste time.

It is better to try to do something than do an envy person.this is intelligent! Yeah! I think so! Clown

Re: Chinese people now disrespecting the West?

Chinese always compare themselves to others and who really cares? I don't think there was a time that they didn't look down on most nations around them.

Another useless Chinese professor.

I love my planet Vulcan. I'm proud of being a Vulcan in the universe.

Re: Chinese people now disrespecting the West?

A more normal relationship with foreigners is probably a good thing really, I always felt slightly uncomfortable if I ever got special treatment at the bank or whatever. Though sometimes it was kind of cool. bye bye rock star treatment!

Re: Chinese people now disrespecting the West?

chinese are too polite to "The West"

especially since apparently "The West" includes southern europe and commonwealth countries.

southern europe has good food and an enviable lifestyle, I guess

but seriously, besides overachievers like Australia and Canada, what the f*** do you people actually do besides sneer, complain, chastise, and breed good musicians?

and the French? f*** if I know, but at least you make your own shitty cars.

Re: Chinese people now disrespecting the West?

Well,IMHO

Many of us respect France, as it has delicate culture and decent wine.

Many of us respect German, as it makes best machinery and great beer.

Many of us respect Japan, as it built amazing combination of the eastern and western civilization. Some people(like) even mentally picture that it will be how China look if we were in a good shape.(Sad)

Many of us respect Amercian, as no matter how f***ed-up its economy is, it's still better than China, plus it's just the symbol of freedom to many of Chinese young people.

The feelings of Anyone from anywhere toward any other country/culture should be mixed/differentiated, so shouldn't you worry, op, no matter how, your neighbour are still nice to you, you don't get unreasoned beating-up every day. Big Grin

Re: Chinese people now disrespecting the West?

China has gained some pride therefore people's attitude is changing towards the West. The Olympics? Had them! ... The Asia Games? Had them too!! ... And which country in the world has 5000 years of history? Well China of course! ... Do you guys believe in Confucianism? No? Shame!! ... Yeah, you are your pizzas and yidali mian, that's just NOT food!... and so on. But after all why not? The world is changing and not all Chinese people are have that attitude.

You live you learn.

Re: Chinese people now disrespecting the West?

Compare Beijing to New York, London, Sydney or any other iconic western city and it's not even close. China is so far behind not only the west but most of their Asian counterparts its just sad. The west might be having some tough times but the majority of China has always been poor and when we bounce back it still will be. Even in these tough times our living standards are far beyond what most Chinese people can even dream about. It's not their fault but their oppressive government's and backwards thinking that keeps most Chinese people from living the kind of life only the elite few enjoy there.
