VPN recommendation

I used witopia for a year, didn't like it. Been using Astrill for a month, so far so good and it works on iPhone.

Re: VPN recommendation

Can you provide some reasons why you didn't like witopia? Otherwise this simply looks like an ad for Astrill in which case it should be in the classifieds.

I've used witopia for a year and generally found it to be good, although occasionally it can be hard to connect. What makes Astrill better?

Re: VPN recommendation

Do you think there is any danger in using local vpns? I've been doing so for the last year and have found a few that are cheap and reliable..

Re: VPN recommendation

Question, do they even work? I use the free ones often and of course they suck, but with these other ones are you all able to check FB, YouT, Twit, etc?
Are they mind blowingly slow?

Just curious, I am so many years disconnected from the many blocked sites so I have evolved, don't miss them but hey, would not mind checking them out once in a while.

Re: VPN recommendation

I have used a few local ones and they seem to be good. I can use the net with no problems whatsoever. Youtube can be a hassle sometimes, but at night it's fine. I have one that is about 30kuai a month which is usually fast with a few servers to choose from. I also have another that I pay 6kuai a month for and I just use that as a backup.

The school I work for provides my internet, it's usually fast but they have something that knocks over pptp vpn connections so I have to use l2tp or I can't keep a connection..

Re: VPN recommendation

If you want a free US-based OpenVPN, let me know. I can make you some certificates to my server so you surf behind the GFW with privacy.

I'm running a dedicated server, so the speed is pretty fast. Let me know if you stiil have any interest.

Re: VPN recommendation

I haven't tried Astrill, but 12vpn is the best that I've found, after trying ExpressVPN, Strongvpn and Witopia. It's fast enough to stream youtube, movies, etc, very reliable and awesome customer support. The Lite package is easily enough and it's 30USD/year if you enter the promo code 'beijing30' at checkout.

Hope this helps.

Re: VPN recommendation

you can try switchvpn their usa vpn is good and costs only $5 a month.

Re: VPN recommendation

If you're a graduate from a college or university in the US or somewhere else overseas, they might have a VPN server on campus that they can give you access to. That's what I do since I'm a new alumn and it's totally free. It's worth asking?

Re: VPN recommendation

Apologies...I thought I had email notifications turned on but apparently not...

Anyway, I've been using Astrill for about 4 months now and can offer a better review now.

This is from the point of OS X and using China UNICOM 2MB ADSL.

I found over WiTopia, better connection frequency, better support, and much better video streaming speed.

Youtube was almost never useable over WiTopia, but depending on the time of day, youtube streaming works quite well with Astrill.

The biggest selling point is their client software (perhaps WiTopia has upgraded theirs...not sure). On OS X, it's very easy to use and switch between servers, as well, you can use it in a sort of "proxy" mode when you just want your web browsing secure, or full VPN mode when you want
all of your network connections secure. You can also configure it per browser which I find really convenient. I can disable Astrill for Firefox which I use for chinese websites for instance and Chrome for Foreign ones so there's no slow down or having to disconnect/reconnect all the time.

The iPhone vpn is a bit more spotty, I had to email support a couple of times to try various servers and finally got one that works about 90% of the time over 3G, and 99% of the time over my home connections. I think it's the 3G connection quality that hampers it. I'm not a heavy phone VPN user though and for someone wanting constant twitter/facebook mobile access it might be a bit tedious. On iPhone the VPN client tends to disconnects quite often.

I just renewed for another 6 months (I don't like going more than that, as you never know when these VPN providers take a dive in quality). But so far so good. 3 people actually signed up with my link, so thanks!

Cheers.

Yes they work pretty well, the only problem is slow down and the hassle of configuration. But it opens up access to all sites that are accessible from where the VPN server is located.

Western governments filter things as well from time to time... for instance thepiratebay.org I've found spotty from US VPN servers, but is fine from China.

Also it keeps your connection secure over insecure wireless connections like the ones you find at airports and coffee shops.

Re: VPN recommendation

I've been using anchorfree for the past 2 months which was free and i downloaded in the US, but its not been working the past 2 days. DO you have any other free ones?

Thanks Smile

Re: VPN recommendation

Hey man!

I would love to know which free VPN you got working for you. My hotspot has not been working for months.

Re: VPN recommendation

i don't think there are any decent free ones anymre. Like you, I used to use hotspot, which was awesome and free but that stopped working several months ago. Eventually I gave up searching and paid for one - Expess VPN.

Its good for everything apart from twitter. Works about about 60kuai a month.
I've heard good things about 12VPN but also heard its been blocked in China recently?
