Salary expections
Hello people, gonna be as forthcoming as possible.
I received an offer form a global company in Beijing and was offered $60,000 a year .
Do you guys think this a good salary for BJ and what standard of living can I have in BJ with this money? Of course this is relative to what i want to spend, but if we look at basics such as housing in central area ( 2 bedroom ), food and nights out , with holiday like normal people will this salary be sufficient? i am really unsure. My wife will also need to live off this till she finds a job herself.
Thanks...

Re: Salary expections
US$60k a year is RMB32,500 a month which is OK. Housing will be your biggest expense and may take perhaps a third of that salary more or less right off the top.
If you have kids then a good school will be expensive. If you plan on driving or having a driver then more expense. If you can try to get housing and schooling for your kids subsidized. If you can manage that then you'll end up saving a boat load of money.
Some foreigners get by on RMB10,000 (or less) so it's doable if you don't plan on being too extravagant.

If it's USD, it's MORE than enough to live on. Many English teachers live on 10,000 RMB per month, which is less than $20,000 per year.
With that salary, you can have a pretty high standard of living. Are they providing a housing allowance, too?

Unfortunately the company will not pay for housing, but company phone, annual flight home to the uk and full healthcare will be provided. also dont have kids yet

Re: Salary expections
Even without housing, $60,000 is a lot. I live on about a third of that, but my housing is mostly paid for by my company. As long as you live somewhere reasonable, you'll be able to afford that salary, for two people. My husband has only found part time work so far, so we're living mostly on my salary. You'll be more than fine.

32K in Beijing is good. You can rent a 2bedroom appartment nearly everywhere, and you won't have to check your expenses everyday.
I make around the same, and I even manage to save around 12K a month

Re: Salary expections
It is a joke, with US$ 60k per year. If you want live expat live that's not enough. Even Chinese local professionals can make more than that. What kind of position do they offer you? This kind of package not including housing, you 'd better re-nogociate with them again, or not take it.

Re: Salary expections
meh, not horrible. that's 60k post-tax, or about 3.2w a month. For a nice rental with 2 bedrooms and well furnished in a central area, and then tossing in utilities and basic transport, you are looking at around 2w a month left for food/savings/shopping. Living like an expat who goes on holiday like an expat, you'll probably manage, but you won't save anything significant.
Personally speaking, I wouldn't bother trying to "live like an expat" until my family was solidly within the Beijing middle-class level. You are just on the very fringe of it to be honest.
