Foreigners can make a very decent living in China as a China Wanderer. Foreign personnel within a company adds value to the company’s overall presentation, which is a very important aspect of Chinese business. So some companies are willing to pay a pretty penny for this kind of appeal, not only for international success, but for domestic. Another, insanely common, method for foreigners to earn money in China is through teaching English. English is in high demand here, to say the least, and jobs within that field are innumerable, easy to find, and highly lucrative. However, the effect this has on foreigners is that they become accustomed to having money thrown at them through inflated salaries, and they in turn bring these fantastic salary expectations with them when they start looking for jobs outside of education. Where these dreams are shredded, dunked in oil, and set on fire a China Wandere can truely feel desperate.

This is not to say that while in China you should stick to teaching, which will earn you less than no respect in any field that requires a skill other than speaking your native (or thoroughly-studied) language, but to get a sense of a real Chinese working wage and living situation before making a switch to enhance yourself up to be a China Wanderer.
