If they were struck by lightning, do the families get a payout from the NZ government too?

I sense greed here because as we all know, only well off Chinese can afford to send their offspring overseas to study. Not only that but the parents are probably in very good jobs which will provide a pension and they most likely own more than one property. They don't need that money at all. Wa cao!

It don't agree. Some chinese kids get scholarships as well.

Some do, but that's not the case the majority of the time. They still need a sh*t load of savings to be able to go abroad.

What really got to me though the emphasis on the fincancial implications. Why won't the Chinese government pay the families instead? They created this problem with the one child policy so they should pay for it instead.

Remind me again.... how much was the compensation given to the families of kids who died in the sichuan earthquakes as a result of cutting corners on the construction of schools?

Sometimes I feel it is maybe unbearable always be traditional Chinese girl.

Eh, the greed's no big surprise. Definitely nothing new.

What I find most appalling is that the Chinese embassy is demanding the additional money "to show how NZ value Chinese international students".

There's an implied "or else" in there.

Another attempt by the CCP to bully another country.

China's attitude and 'logic' are so ridiculous. Next they will be wanting tribute money only because they are China.

China makes a law limiting the amount of children a couple can have. The couple have a child. Child dies 20 years later in an earthquake in another country. China demands payment from other nation because of it's own domestic laws in procreation.

Same story but in China years earlier. Parents of dead kids demand justice for crap buildings due to government corruption. Chinese says sign this paper and shut up or you will be sorry.

Someone has a mental problem.

i suppose the news article didn't highlight clearly that the "compensation" referred therein is payouts by local insurance companies. i'm sure that it's a prerequisite that all foreign students buy some form of insurance in NZ before they are allowed to pursue their course of study.

i suppose that would be a request from one country to another....it becomes a diplomatic request.

The problem is that there is designated protocol and China very often has economic pressure flying under the flag of diplomatic requests which if successful are then announced to the homely masses as the "erroneous" target country kowtowing to the master race.

Some individuals in government show that despite the revolution and opening up their psyche is still rooted in imperial thought.
We are China and therefore require, to be kowtowed to,payment of Tribute,a cheaper price on your resources than you are getting from everyone else, and we will decide which visitors you can receive.
This form of attempted bullying is counterproductive and loses respect.
In truth it is symptomatic of the common Chinese inability to consider relationships between equals.There appears no such thing in the 'culture'.
