Turtle King Scooter/Electric Bike (or Honda Joker Clone) - Round 2
This is a follow-up on my previous popular thread:
Turtle King Scooter/Electric Bike (or Honda Joker Clone)
I highly suggest looking through that discussion to find any information on basics, however, please continue to feel free to ask questions and I'll continue to answer.
I bought a new one of these mid-March, 2011, and still love it. I am using my previous battery and power controller.
My current configuration:
Battery: 60V42Ah
Power Controller: 800W
Motor: 500W
Upgrades from my previous configuration:
Speedometer: Digital (provides battery voltage remaining and more accurate speed, etc.)
Extra-wide Rear tire: It looks like a bigger bike from behind, and should be giving me more traction.
ABS: I can now brake more safely without locking up the wheels and flipping the bike which is what happened last time (A big thank you for the jack@$$ driver who stopped in the middle of the bike lane and made me swerve).
This configuration allows me to top out at speeds of about 51 km/h on the digital speedometer (the original speedometer was off the charts indicating over 70km/h), and this is pretty much going as fast and sometimes faster than the cars on the 4th ring service road (northern and eastern parts). My typical weekend route has me riding the 4th Ring Road from Sihui (四惠) to Peking University, so you get an idea of what I'm doing, it consistently takes me about 40-45 minutes each way, and I can easily do a round-trip with extra around the area riding while I'm near PKU, all on one charge. My most extreme one-way time was 35 minutes during the night when most locals are already home and sleeping (ie. 23:30). You will have a hard time finding a taxi that can actually compete with this travel time.
And yet I am contemplating upgrading my power controller and motor to more wattage, which would lower range a little, yet increase speed.
The place I went to buy my bike is part of the China Electric Vehicle Alliance (电动车联盟). They have a website at www.ddclm.com. This website is in Chinese. They have a network of "authorized resellers" in China listed here: www.ddclm.com/salenet. I've had trouble clicking on the map, but can always get in through the list on the left. There are many in Beijing and more around the country.
I personally went to the one near the Tsinghua University West Gate. They did a standup job and have always been helpful on subsequent visits to get upgrades and a problem with a loose turn signal wire, and I had them refocus my headlamp as well as bulb to a whiter light. While the price is a bit more to get an "Alliance bike", I found the price difference to be worth it as they believe in their quality as being superior, and thus far, I would have to agree.
These guys also sale other different styles of e-bikes, but I can only say I prefer the cruiser riding-position that Turtle Kings provide. If you are interested in the Gas/Petrol-powered version of the Turtle Kings, they sale them at the Tsinghua University West Gate location as well, and from what I saw, running Yamaha engines. I would expect these to sale between 3000 to 4000 RMB.

Hey, Aggie, thanks for the great series, I read them all -- I'm wondering why you chose the Turtle King over other brands? I don't need anything superfast, just a 2 seater for myself and my wife and I really trust the Giant brands -- don't you think their Elem series is good enough? Or the Yamaha Metis, isn't that good enough as well? I just want a bike to work forever with minimal repair and proven quality.
I'd much rather pay a bit more to get a bike in China from respectable, older foreign companies than any local brand...

Hi,
I went to some shops and got more confused. Is "Turtle King" the model or name of the brand? When I went to the shops two different brands showed me a "turtle". One was Shenzhen something or other and I dont remember the brand of the other one. If its the name of the brand, are they not as common as others like Citify etc?

Re: Turtle King Scooter/Electric Bike (or Honda Joker ...
I do not recommend to buy ebike from the China Electric Vehicle Alliance and the Tsinghua University West Gate dealer!
This is what happened to me. I read various reviews about ebikes on few expats websites and I liked the Aggie’s review the best. And because my office is not far from the shop Aggie bought his bike I decided to do the same. I went to the www.ddclm.com site and build bike to my liking using DIY tool. Having this in my hand and my Chinese colleague from work to help me negotiate the deal I went to order the bike. O, I did one more thing, I found on line battery that I liked and I printed the specs and price. After short negotiations they agreed to match the price of the battery and took the copy of the specs for the bike I had build on line. They told me that it will take 10 days for the bike to arrive as it is higher specs that they normally sell. Well, it took them 3 weeks to deliver the bike. When they delivered they told me that the digital speedometer that I ordered on line is not the correct one and they will have better one for RMB280 in a week time. I was so happy of finally getting the bike I checked only battery, electric motor, breaks and tiers if they were as per specs. One thing that caught my eye was that the head lamp did look spanking new. I accepted the bike and started commuting from my apartment to office and back. First evening I was using the bike I noticed that the light was very weak and I decided to upgrade my bulb. I went to the shop and they did this for extra RMB60. After taking the bike for a spin I noticed that my light indicator flickers which indicted loose wire or short in the circuit. I opened the head lamp to investigate and noticed that the wires are very old and the shield is falling apart exposing bear wire that touches the body of the lamp. I was not very happy with this and I took the bike back to the shop. When they opened the front of the bike exposing more cables I noticed that most of the cables are old. I started complaining but they ignored me. At the same time there was another biker in the shop for some servicing with similar ebike to mine. We had a chat and he told me that I should upgrade my suspension to nitrogen filled. This is when I realized that this is what actually I had ordered my bike to be equipped with but it was not. I started arguing with the dealer but they would not listen to me. They said because I took the bike as it was they will not do any changes to it unless I pay for it extra. They argued that there is mistake on line and the suspension that they offer does not work with my bike. The same story as the digital speedometer that they told me when they delivered the bike. Any arguments from me and my Chinese collogue did make no difference. I told them that I am not very happy with the service and I will make sure that I am the last foreigner that they have sold the bike to and I left the shop.
Sorry for the long post but I wanted for potential victim be aware what to expect when buying ebike from www.ddclm.com

Re: Turtle King Scooter/Electric Bike (or Honda Joker ...
I'm sorry about the bad experience, I have not had a bad experience with them. However, the wait for my last upgrade was months. I ordered a upgrade to a 2000W motor and controller. I got the upgrade in July. It was apparently a lack of supply issue, since most people don't get that level of upgrade.
Turtle King is the model. There is no particular brand. Although I still recommend the DDCLM as a brand for hardware.

Thanks for you posts, man! We got a lot of good info from them, and helped us get our new scooters. We're very happy with them. We're kind of far from the shop you recommended, but found a good one near us. Thanks again.

Re: Turtle King Scooter/Electric Bike (or Honda Joker ...
Ok, so here's a question. I've seen a bunch of people saying you just need those 10RMB white plates with black letters to register an electric scooter like the Turtle King or the Metis or whatever. We bought two a week ago at our local scooter shop, and they also said 10RMB and are in the process of getting the plates for us. It all seemed legit and they seemed to know what they were talking about. For example, we got them early in the holiday and they told us to come back with our passport, visa and household registration on the 7th, and to expect it would take more than a week because that department of the police would just open on the 8th and would be swamped Saturday with people wanting stuff done. That seemed to make good sense.
But then I noticed that BikesBeijing charges 199RMB to get the plate, and claims on their site that these plates aren't currently available in Beijing and that theirs are from a neighboring province but are "real official plates." I wrote them and asked, and they say that scooters cost more to register than pedal electric bikes, and that a 10RMB plate is expired, copied, or not properly registered. Ok, fair enough, but if the local scooter shop is selling expired or copied plates, why go through the charade of getting a week-long legit registration? In my experience here, it would be more likely they'd assume foreigners don't know any better and just sell them the plates right there. Anyway, don't know if the local scooter shop is just getting us something easy to avoid work for themselves, or if BikesBeijing is just trying to sell me something.
Anyway, just wondering if anyone actually knows what the rule is. I know finding a definitive answer to anything around here is kind of like hoping to be able to catch the wind. But anyone who knows anything for sure or has any experience in this area...your thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: Turtle King Scooter/Electric Bike (or Honda Joker ...
Rob, having read your reviews and appreciated your advice when looking to buy a scooter a year ago, and having drawn a complete blank trying to reach BikesBejing.com from whom I went on to buy my Turtle King last November (both emailed and posted on their website), I wonder if you would mind helping me with some queries?
The spec I have is 60V/ 20AH/ 1000W - lead-acid (as they didn't do Li-ion then) and the battery charger has now burnt out so I need to replace it - do you know if it has to be specific to that setup or will any charger do? Where will I find one?!
As an alternative, I would love to just upgrade to Li-ion - say 60 or 72V but with the longer lasting 42AH or more, (as 20AH gives rubbish range - can't get from one side of the City and back on one charge - even in high summer - and that's just 3rd ring road to 3rd ring road...) but as BikesBeijing are so poor at responding I'm loth to fill their pockets, even if they ever do bother to reply.
You mentioned that your "good" supplier north of here has gone, so do you know where else I could get such a battery pack? I know you mentioned the West gate of Tsinghua University, but I assume you kept your old battery after your crash and so didn't need them for that? I don't speak Chinese, so that's another consideration.
Another concern is the constant threat of e-bikes being banned - you are probably aware that one city - Shenzhen - in Guangdong Province has had a trial 6 month ban in place this year but I don't know whether that proved successful or was dropped. Other cities including Beijing were apparently going to watch the experiment with interest but I've heard nothing more. Have you?
Hope you can help
Thanks

@Since1997
Plates, honestly, no one cares, Welcome to China. the black text on white plates are for all "non-motorized" vehicles, which I understand as anything that isn't petrol/gas based. So the plates are for bicycles, electric or not. you'll even be able to see them on those little mini-cars sometimes, sometimes gas-bikes have them to "pass" as electric. The only place I've encountered here that wants to see plates for a bike is school campus. They sometimes bother to check for it before letting you in. Otherwise, you'll never need it.
For anyone else interested, gas-plates don't seem to be a big deal either, only needed for filling-up. you can even pull up at a station, reach under the seat, show them you have the plate, they'll fill it up, and then you just never "install" the plate on the back. O well.
@noggie
that config with a lead battery? seriously? didn't know they could do that... how far can it go? at what speed? merely curious...
i don't know about chargers on that one, but i'm told my bad boy would be permanently damaged to use something more generic. they have generic types for the typical batteries, but i can't claim any expertise.
i trust the guys at my place by Tsinghua, and they said they can do li-ion battery for me too... although my guy there would want my battery for himself too. haha. they have some nice super e-bikes too.
i think beijing would be stupid to ban e-bikes, the traffic is so bad here, less four-wheeled private vehicles would be more sensible, but the public option is not up to snuff. air quality is bad, so i understand the ban on gas, need to give alternatives. i doubt the public would be happy with this type of flip on policy. so don't worry about it.

Re: Turtle King Scooter/Electric Bike (or Honda Joker ...
Hey Aggie Rob,
I just picked up my own King Turtle and paid the extra 2k for the Li-Ion setup. Bike arrived with what they told me was Li-Ion, but I'm not so sure... weighs 18lbs, is removable with carry handle, but the side sticker says 20ah-48v.
I was expecting the li-Ion to be lighter and to be something along the lines of 24ah-48v. Should I be concerned?
Thanks!

Re: Turtle King Scooter/Electric Bike (or Honda Joker ...
Hi Everybody,
I just want to share my King Turtle Scooter experience. My wife bought me a Turtle King Scooter for my birthday last year and have been using it for about 6 months. The bike was bought from Beijing Bikes and from the day it arrived until now, I have had all sorts of problems with the e-scooter. When it first arrived and I took a ride on it, it seemed ok and we paid for it. Two days and after a couple of rides, the suspension started squeaking and the speedometer stopped working. The front disc brakes were shaving off the front wheels, creating a super annoying sound whenever I rode the bike.
We called Beijing Bikes, which after a couple of heated phone exchange conversation, sent a guy over. He spent an hour tinkering with the e-scooter and said that everything was fine. After he left, I rode the bike for a short trip and found that the problems returned. After giving up on Bikes Beijing, I looked up the ddclm website and checked out one of the mechanics in Lido. The young chap seemed to know what he was doing, and had the digital speedometer in stock, which I decided to change as the original one was so unreliable. Till today we can never get an accurate reading on the power reserve. The new speedometer, popped out of the cover after 2 weeks.
Over last weekend, I took the e-scooter down Xidawang Road and saw a bike mechanic there, and decided to ask him why my e-scooter is so under powered. He checked my e-scooter and told me that the power controller on the back wheel, which says is 1000W is a fake and is only 800W. I have never been able to get 20km range out of my e-scooter on a full charge. As the e-scooter is a leisure vehicle, I just use it whenever I am in a good mood, but have end up pushing it back 4 out of 10 times using it and it has been more a pain than a pleasure.
For those who are consider the King Turtle, please think twice and buy a simple e-bike with paddles.

Re: Turtle King Scooter/Electric Bike (or Honda Joker ...
@setan76: Dude! I'm so sorry to hear you've had such a bad time with your bike. I can't comment on the suppliers you've had, since I've never used them. I can only say that if readers want a good, reliable, and potentially fast e-bike, you may want to go buy it exactly where I bought it.
I've not had any crazy issues such as "fake" power controllers and such, if anything, I've only bump into issues where after I changed power controller up to 2000W and matching motor, I had a breaker switch that would jump a bit too much, and had to upgrade that for 50RMB, now it's all good.
@CAinCN: I've never heard of a price tag for Li-ion being that low, actually. But then again, I wasn't buying one as an upgrade from Lead, but as a full-price purchase to replace my already used Lead battery. Does that make sense? Ignore any labels on the battery case, they don't necessarily reflect what was put inside. Mine is just a metal box with a handle on top, nothing pretty to look at. I've never put my batteries on a scale, so I can't say I know how much they weigh. But girls and many Chinese guys would say mine is too heavy to lift. I think of it as a security thing and also that it gives my bike some weight, and considering how much lighter these things are compared to real bikes outside of China, I feel more comfortable with some substance under the seat.
Anyway, I went all out and got the battery to be 60V42Ah, which makes it quite heavy. When they say it is light, they mean the same amount of power in the Lead battery is much heavier to it's equivalent Li-ion counterpart.
So usually, upgrading to Li-ion allows you to get a bigger battery with much more power. That's how I moved from a slower 25km/h bike with 25km range to my current 60km/h, 55km range (give or take). Now, these numbers are my experience, and I'm a heavy guy, so anyone less than 220 lbs will have more range (and maybe go even faster?).
Hope this helps.

Re: Turtle King Scooter/Electric Bike (or Honda Joker ...
My new black electric Turtle King arrived this afternoon. I love it, even though it is a bit cheaply made (but I would not have expected any less lol). I took it for a spin, and damn, Beijing traffic is scary. But the right (rear) brake does not work well. I can pull the lever all the way with no perceptible braking. Does anyone know how I can adjust this? Thanks!

Re: Turtle King Scooter/Electric Bike (or Honda Joker ...
Hmm, I don't know about the location of the brake lever on your bike. Right-Hand Brake Lever should be attached to the front wheel, this is in line with motorcycles and motor-scooters. The rear-brake is foot-operated on motorcycles with a clutch, and located in place of the clutch at the left-hand handle on clutch-less scooters, such as the gas-powered Turtle King.
As to the other aspect. Which of the following is your brake system:
1) a disc-hydraulic setup on both front and back?
2) a disc-hydraulic brake on front and drum-cable brake on back?
3) a drum-cable setup on both front and back?
Note: Admittedly, I have never seen or heard of a drum brake on the front, but essentially, look to see if you have hydraulic brake-fluid chambers on both sides of the handlebars, or if just on the front brake, and not on the left.

There are hydraulic chambers for each one. I think it is just a matter of adjusting the right lever itself. I know on my odl Royal Enfield motorcycle you could, but I cannot find any way to do it on this one.
