instant coffee

not up for going to starbucks every morning, its wasteful and expensive. not up for bringing a french press to work and having to store and clean it, with no proper washing facilities. anyone drink any non-sweet instant coffee that's ok? black or with milk powder would both be alright. might move on to green tea or something.. but, well, you know how it is.

Trust me, it's so danger.

Re: instant coffee

I occasionally drink Nescafe - and it's not great, it's pretty sh*t actually but what are you gonna do?.... so is Starbucks.

Re: instant coffee

Actually, I saw Starbucks has their own brand of instant coffee yestrday. It was ridiculously expensive though. Sorry, forget how much exactly.
I drink those Nescafe packs. It's possible to acquire a taste for some gross things if you just keep at it long enough.
For me, as long as it has caffeine I am fine.
Maybe you could make concentrated coffee ice cubes, pop one in a travel mug and add hot water at the office.
I used to do that with real chicken soup when I was sick, don't know if it would work with coffee.

Yeah I've actually acquired a taste for the little packs with sugar and "milk" added.
Though I try to cut it out as I'm fat as fatass these days...so I stick to the black nescafe stuff and it's generally rotten.

I went from exclusively drinking black coffee before I came here to drinking powdered milk/coffee/sugar crap.
I would definitely lose some mianzi if my family could see me.

Re: instant coffee

i'm a turkish coffee freak.
i usually bring 3-5k's back with me from any trip i go to.

i can't stand instant. filtered is weak. nescafe is nocafe.
espresso is fine. no matter how shitty it can get to be in beijing,
any couple of double espressos will do fine for an afternoon.

can't help with what to do at work but maybe a thermos of filter coffee?
i do it sometime when i'm out of turkish...

sometimes, if i see them, i like the green nescafe cans.
it tastes strong at least. like maybe it could be real coffee. Big Grin

oh yeah? well, let me ask you this: shut up!

Re: instant coffee

never been to turkey, but when i was in sarajevo, i loved the tureen things (not sure what they are called) and they give you a little piece of turkish delight and a sip of water and you sit around yammering for hours in the coffee shop. so cool, feels like you're doing something thats been happening more or less the same way for centuries.

Trust me, it's so danger.

Re: instant coffee

Why don't you get one of these and make coffee at home in the morning? That's what I do and I'm awesome.

I tend to get the ground coffee from 711. I'm sure there's much better out there but with coffee you tend to get an absolutely miniscule improvement in quality for the expensive stuff.

Re: instant coffee

mornings are just completely out of my league CZ. i can barely walk or breathe in the morning let alone make coffee.
rip > pour out in mug > add water > stare vacuously at screen until 11. that's how i need it to go in nanaland.

Trust me, it's so danger.

Re: instant coffee

@nana,

yep, exactly. centuries old tradition.

the turkish coffee is pretty much omnipresent in east/southeast europe/balkans.
the turkish delight is just awesome. it's real name is lokum. my favorite are rose and pistachio.
well ok, the roasted pistachio/coconut is not bad either.
the classic lemon is always welcomed, of course.
the newer kinds (all classic tastes covered in chocolate) are just amazing too! Big Grin
i believe the turkish word for the 'tureen' is jezve.
i love bosnian people. must be one of the nicest nations.
also, their 'boorek' or whatever they call their home made pastry pie...OMG! f-ing delicious stuff! Drooling

oh yeah? well, let me ask you this: shut up!

Re: instant coffee

hey, also, the american style filter coffee.
get it all ready (but not cooked, of course) sometime before you get to bed.
wake up, press the button, coffee's ready in 2-3 minutes.
drink a cup before you go, pour the rest in your thermos. add some baileys. happy hour at work. Party

I thought you said you'd knocked the booze on the head and leap out of bed each morning with the enthusiasm and vitality of a spring lamb?

What happened to that? Thinking

Re: instant coffee

With Nescafe, its better to buy the black and add milk etc, the premixed powder is like 99.99999% sugar. The large bags are cheaper than the tins and JL's is cheaper than everywhere because she miss priced it.

Re: instant coffee

Instant coffee tastes better with milk rather than water.

Put a couple of spoonfulls into a jar, add a small amount of boiling water to melt it. Top up with milk and a couple of ice cubes, put the lid on and shake it.

The milk makes it easier to make it stronger so you can have get a real caffeine buzz going Hypnotized

Re: instant coffee

Golden Bean Indian Instant Coffee (Original). I add a little milk to make it more tasty. I like it.

Comfortable.

Re: instant coffee

Sanyuanli market has Nescafe black coffee big bags for less than 70 rmb... compared to a local Chinese supermarket selling same size cans for 150 rmb at the best... Surprise

I a world of iPods... No-one can hear you scream

Re: instant coffee

Nicodemus da man! Cool

Re: instant coffee

Introduce coffee fan a brand: Bencafe, brazil flavor and three in one. I think it tastes OK! Adapt to Those can't afford everyday consumption in Starbuck.

And green tea is also a good choice.

Or a mixturer. Coffee flavor milky tea.

Re: instant coffee

Get a nespresso machine Smile The coffee comes in pods so its easy to clean up the mess after. Much better than filter. There are also a number of other companies who make home espresso type machine, well worth the money,

I use these things called 'geocafe' from certain 7/11 stores. They are little filter bags with fresh coffee in. You tear the top, pull the card tabs open so it can hang over the cup and add water a few times. Once i started drinking these i couldnt go back to the Nescafe instant sachets, which are little more than caffeine + sugar+ coffee flavour. Poison. The geocafe sachets come with powdered milk too. I think they are taiwanese. They are about 20 kuai for a box of 5.

Re: instant coffee

My daughter thought the three packs of Starbucks instant coffee were free samples and helped herself. When I went back to return them I asked how much they were. 25 RMB for three.
I think I will stick to cheap poison. Actually, now that the gulag has released its prisoners for summer break I make real coffee a lot more. One of the luxuries of being on jailbreak.

Re: instant coffee

This weird little place has sachets of various types of coffee for sale.

I tried the unsweetened cappuccino. It wasn't too bad actually - for instant. And something a bit different.

Re: instant coffee

Use theeeeeese:

It's not instant coffee. It's proper coffee, just convenient. I stocked up at the Dongzhimen nei 7/11 this morn.

good call for both the geo cafe and the sachets at godot, thanks!

Re: instant coffee

I've used ground coffee in those metal "tea balls" meant for loose tea with varied results.

If you can get one with a really fine mesh and coffee that's not ground too fine, it works best obviously. If you can ground your own beans it can work really well.

You end up with more sediment than usual, but I don't think it hurts the flavor. Much better than any kind of instant and just as convenient IMO.

Re: instant coffee

I have to have my two cups of instant coffee every morning or I just don't have a great day!

I hate to admit it but J-Lo came up trumps with the unsweetened cap they sell at Waiting for Godot, the canny tart.

Me: I hate you, Jenny Lou! Angry
Her: And I hate you too customer! Kiss See you next week?
Me: Yeah... Sad

Re: instant coffee

I had no idea you could get unsweatened instant coffee. It usually is sweater than Coke. I don't like all of that sugar in everything.
