Staying in China on a residence permit after quitting job
So I've scoured the usual forums and everyone seems to be saying different things. I'm just wondering if anyone out there actually has a definitive answer (even though definitive answers are so rare in China). Basically I'll be getting a work visa (and subsequently a residence permit) next month, after which I plan to quit my job. Can my employer cancel the residence permit without physically having my passport? And if so, how will I know if it has been cancelled or not? I just want to stay in China while I'm figuring out whether or not to get another job.

If you quit your job and break your contract, you will have to leave China to get a new Z visa, assuming you want to work legally.

Hi, there
1>If you quit job , your employer can cancel your employment permit or expert permit , but it is hard to cancel your Residence Permit without your passport .
2>If your visa already has been cancelled by employer , you will have 10 days L visa on your passport .
3>What's your nationality ? Maybe I can sponsor you do Residence Permit without have the job . ( without leave the China )

Hi, not sure what you mean by no.2 -Do you mean if my employer cancels my residence permit?

hi,
To cancell your residence permit, your original passport is required. Your employer can not cancell your residence permit without your original passport.
But if you want to find another job and want to change your residence permit under new employer, you'd better talk with your current employer kindly and get a release letter from the current employer.
The release letter is very useful and important for you later when you want to change your residence permit under new employer.

Hi both kind respondents, as I've said before, I don't really intend to work again in China, I just want to stay in Beijing. I don't care about the work permit. How will I know if my employer has cancelled my residence permit?

hi,
If your residence permit is cancelled, there will be a stamp "cancelled" on the residence permit page. And you will get a new L visa valid for 10 days at the same time.

well, forget about the Employment Permit, if you are holding your passport with your RP, then its still valid. But if you are not planning to find another job, according to how long you will stay in Beijing, you can
1. keep the current RP if you will only stay short period in beijing;
2. to stay here longer and avoid any other problem, you can apply for other visa;
If you have more questions, feel free to contact me.
