Y do u feel bad when a Chinese being kind with u even he/her ask for free oral practice?
am a beijinger.
Firstly, I admit that i register here to find a native english speaker for exchange oral practice.
But, after browsing posts of u, "the beijinger",I surprising find that u guys jeer at Chineses' poor accent. I don understand how could u do that. Is ur oral Chinese good enough as a native speaker? W/o communication, how can they know what is right?
Here is China. Nobody is mocking at ur accent. Even u cannot speak chinese, u could get wherever u wanna be, I am so sure. It is not because the fluent spoken english of chinese ppl, but beacuse they r glad to help u.
Yes, we need to face things such as "cultural gaps", but how could u REFUSE to a stranger at the first glance, just on account of ur bad experience in the past. If u dont speak to the strangers, how could u know CHINA?

On an online forum where nobody knows your real name, people seem to be a lot less friendly. I wouldn't take it to heart; there are nice people out there too!

Re: Y do u feel bad when a Chinese being kind with u even ...
The problem has nothing to do with language exchange or culture gaps.
The problem is expectations. Specifically, unrealistic expectations.
Some people will be eager and happy to practice English with you, some people will not. Just as some Chinese people are friendly and helpful, and some are not.
You have the right to approach people and they have the right to shut you down.
It's called reality, get in touch with it.
And one little additional piece of friendly advice for you and your fellow English learners: if you are hoping to converse with people from other countries, you should skip your little compulsory geographical public service announcement.
This may come as a bit of a surprise, but people not behaving in the exact way you would like them to doesn't necessarily mean that they don't know where they are. Anyone who feels the need to point out that this is China immediately goes in my "no desire to talk to ever" category.

One more point is that people don't always respond to our requests with kindness. If you meet somebody and immediately ask them to do you a favor by taking the time to listen to you practice your English, they may not be interested in helping. Perhaps the world would be a better place if everybody was willing to do that. Maybe a better approach would be to simply approach people with genuine interest in them instead of an ulterior motive.

Chinese people mock my poor Chinese all the time so don't get high and mighty with us. The Chinese look at us like we are stupid idiots when we don't understand something or say something wrong.

Too true Zhenlai,my chinese sucks and I know it.I just don't need some cocky so-and-so's poking fun at my efforts in a language I can't understand!
Only yesterday I had five people in Oriental Plaza stopping me with the standard introduction " where you from?I am student you want to speak some english and have a starbucks?"
A pair asked me if I needed help because I was sat on a wall minding my own business, watching the world go by,in the sunshine.
The cynic would asssume that somehow these lovelies are going to try and extract cash from a nieve laowai at every possible opportunity, even down to a back-handed commission from Starbucks and over-priced coffee......
My missus who's chinese thinks they are all hookers who maybe want the 'I conquered a laowai' badge for their brownie uniform, hmmm mybe she's more cynical than I ......
But to answer the original statement from randomize, people earn a living from oral english coaching so they are most certiainly not going to do themselves out of cash when there are so many unscrupulous agents in China that will screw you to the wall. Not your fault no,but as they say in England - you makes your bed so you get to lay in it!!!!

Sorry, I fail to reply each of you by the "reply"button.
I have not expected my confusion could draw your attention. THANKS A LOT!
@BJnerd What does name do? Do u mean personality or something? One standing in front of you, u could say that you know a lot about him? Face to face practice will benefit each other. And I am not the one who run to you ask for practise, I have never done that, although I eager to the opportunities to communicate with you. You must notice that not everyone who want to do exercises could take the chance to know you guys.
@waitaitai Well, you are right. "That's depends." is always be true, but it is not a solution or make a difference, isnt it? Thank you for advice, but some explanation is expected:( I could not understand what is "compulsory geographical public service announcement". Do you mean the last sentence of "China" in my post? "China" could be placed by "the state", I do not mean china is different or who is minority or something, just because all of us are in this state. I am meaning the necessity of communication.
No matter who living in Beijing, he/she needs to know the society, the culture and the people.
The initial reason of my complanation just because the top post in the BBS "English teaching and lang. exchange ads here will be delet". what is ads? Information posted by teaching organizations or companies? Are individuals' announcement about FREE practice ads? While companies' ad are forbidden, do you trust individuals who you do not know? (Well,BJnerd will not trust them) If both of these should be forbidden, what is the use of forum? Free practise must be based on friendship or mutual identify. Talking must be filled with exchange of ideas. Of course it is not taking advantages of you. What if I posted that i wannna a friend to spend the weekend with me, and i state that we could practice chinese and english too in the last sentense. Is it difference with a free practice ads? Where is the boundary?
@Zhenlai Although some Chineses mock your Mandarin, do they tell you how to speak it well at the moment? Then you get a chance to practice the right one. Despite a bit(?) impoliteness, it is really effective to improve your Chinese and your understanding. I do not know foreigner who tell me about my poor pronunciation, it is gentle but you discuss such things here.
@alwn If they just want you to speak english, I am agree with you that they are impolite . But i think some of them are of the same condition as me. My college has few foreigner students or visiting scholars or international summer school. I am seeking for further education in Northern America, I need to know the people, the culture, and the living styles, then make a decision if studying abroad is suit with me. I am longing for communication. It is my case. Well, some of them are probably of the same situation as mine. Also, you know the unscrupulous companies charge a lot for oral training lessons(do not worry about your umemployment in China, you could teach English=P). I do not think I could afford it. In addition, I do not like the type of oral class, I want to know people, make friends and I would like to show you my hometown in my eyes. What i need is a experience, not only a oral class.

Well, I say people can 'refuse' stranger whenever they want to, it's called personally choice.
Are you telling us if a random 40 old dudes comes to you and want to bang, you simply cannot refuse, otherwise you can't know him. lol

I 100% agree on this. I hate it when I try my best saying what I want in Chinese with all the actions and facial expression and they turn their back on me saying "ting bu dong" without even trying to understand what I'm saying. I even hear others saying "ben dan".

It is true, zhenlai. I have been doing self-examination lately and realise i have been rude and unconscious to a lot of people, which makes me feel bad. In terms of Chinese language, i was being over-protective because subconsciously i thought Chinese language only belongs to Chinese people, only Chinese people can speak perfect mandarin, bla bla bla. That was wrong. now i realise some foreingers do speak fluent Chinese, so i will try my best to respect that and be nice to people.

Re: Y do u feel bad when a Chinese being kind with u even ...
I agree with some comments that have been made. It seems that many Chinese people don't expect foreigners to speak any Chinese, so they don't even try to understand. It is also really common for them to say 听不懂 and then blow you off. I believe, however, that they largely have no idea how rude that comes across to foreigners.
One of the biggest failings Chinese people have in interactions with foreigners is they don't know how to speak slowly. Many people seem to have no idea that they should slow down their speech to help you understand. I believe this is because most Chinese people haven't had much interactions with non-native speakers, and this makes them ignorant and awkward in some social aspects. It's not their fault; it's just a result of isolation from the rest of the world. In Europe and America we are used to dealing with people learning our language and I dare say we are better and more friendly at communicating with foreigners.
My Chinese wife's family doesn't speak Mandarin very well, although their dialect isn't too different from Mandarin. Nonetheless, it makes communication difficult, and I have been shocked at how little effort they put into communicating with me. It's like they have given up. This is a cultural issue, and it doesn't mean they are bad people.
In response to the original post, I agree with what has been said about the need for you to first make some friends before you ask for help. Make friends with an English-speaker, and then eventually say "Can you please be brutally honest with my English? Please correct me when I'm wrong." Chances are that your friend understands the concept of "face" and doesn't want to embarrass you. Even in America where "face" isn't as big of a deal, it's still somewhat embarrassing to correct people's accent unless they ask you to.

I'm an American and if you try to correct my accent you will find yourself confronted by a very angry man shaking a fist in your face. Do it twice and you will find your butt looking at the sunshine. Accents are not to be corrected. Only grammar is to be corrected.

Re: Y do u feel bad when a Chinese being kind with u even ...
In my experience, Chinese usually equate having bad tones with having a bad accent. In my humble opinion, having bad tones is egregious, and I am always very grateful for anyone who will correct me. Also, haven't you met any Asians with OK grammar but an accent so bad it is hard to understand them? Bad accents can interfere severely with communication, and I think they can warrant correction.

Re: Y do u feel bad when a Chinese being kind with u even ...
Accents are not to be equated with dialects. Chinese is not a language. It is a collection of languages that uses a central dialect for the numerous dialects to communicate with one another. There is no natural, central, Chinese language so there are no bad accents. There is nothing to correct. It is your responsibility to work to understand each of the varying accents and dialects, not correct them because you have only learned the Beijing dialect and accent.

Re: Y do u feel bad when a Chinese being kind with u even ...
You are right, dialects and accents of course are different. But for a foreigner trying to speak Mandarin (普通话 to be precise), incorrect tones can interfere with communication. As I said before, the Chinese people I've talked to consider foreigners to have a bad Chinese accent when they speak Mandarin with incorrect tones.
I am not sure what you mean by saying I shouldn't correct them; do you mean I, as an American, shouldn't correct native Chinese speakers on their accent? Of course. Or, do you mean that I, as an American, should not correct other foreigners who are attempting to speak Mandarin on their accent?
Regardless, I never spoke about me correcting others. My only point was that I am grateful when Chinese speakers correct my Mandarin. And, when I try and speak other dialects, I am grateful when they correct my accent/tones in those dialects as well.
