Cost of Living in Beijing

Hi-
How much money would an expat need to make monthly to live a comfortable life in Beijing. I know the city is actually incredibly expensive - with one of the highest costs of living in the world - but is there any way to cut corners? Thanks.

Re: Cost of Living in Beijing

u can cut corners really good Big Grin get a cheap flat behind 4th ring (1 room) for like 3000-4000 yuan / month. eat half chinese and half western food.. would be like around 300 yuan per week , so 1200 in a month
water/gas/air condition would be arround 500 per month ( air condition is rly expensive)
going out and other buying stuff would be another 1000 yuan
so in total i think as a single person u can live very good for
7000 yuan ! sharing a flat will get u even cheaper Smile ( i skipped health insurances because i dont know how u want 2 handle it)

Re: Cost of Living in Beijing

As cheap or expensive as you like.

Remmy be pimpin' in BJ, yo!

Re: Cost of Living in Beijing

Is it really one of the most expensive cities in the world?

Compared to the UK everything seems dirt cheap.

Re: Cost of Living in Beijing

one of the highest costs of living in the world? lol ,if you ever lived in other cities like Toyko or NYC, you won't say so

I know everything is cheap here, i dont get why people think it is expensive. unless they go to starbucks everyday and only buy western things then it cant be dear to live here.

edinburgh and london are way more expensive than bj

Re: Cost of Living in Beijing

I've never been able to go below 10,000 per month,l and i usually just eat street food because it uses good oils that make your muscles grow faster.

I can't speak for the Chinese people but even the lowest paid foregners here, who get - perhaps - 5,000 plus accommodation could save money every month if they wanted to.

Re: Cost of Living in Beijing

I don't think Beijing has on of the highest cost of living in the world, there are lot more expensive cities than Beijing, but I think for the high price that we pay in Beijing we don't get our money worth.....

Re: Cost of Living in Beijing

Beijing is ranked 20th for 2011, and was 16th last year. I don't know why everyone thinks Beijing is so cheap unless you eat street food everyday, only wear fake clothes and live in Tongzhou...

Damn I'm hot. I'm on fire!

I guess you got your figures from this link: http://www.citymayors.com/features/cost_survey.html

It says the index of cost of living is based on US$, and if the US$ weakens against the local currency, the city goes high in rank....

So for my opinion, the survey doesn't make sense, just because the RMB has a stronger value against the US$ doesn't mean it should be considered high in cost of living index.....

Look at the facts, the average salary for an office staff in beijing is around 4000 to 5000 RMB, and yet they are living very well, some of them even have a car....... show me a descent city where someone can live with 600 to 700 US$ a month.... in some countries such as Canada people get that much amount on welfare..........

Re: Cost of Living in Beijing

Ultra-cheap:

Utilities, cigs, beer/chinese liquor, street foods, public transport, haircuts, soda, tea, herbs

Moderately priced:

Chinese market food, taxis, restaurants, knock-off clothes, yunnan coffee

Moderately expensive:

Imported foods, fruit, cafes, rent, electronics

Very expensive:

Decent bars, real-estate, brand-name goods, cars

1. OK dipsh1t, you don't have to use dollars, use effin bananas if you want. What else do you want to compare it to?

2. The OP is talking about expats in Beijing, not about the locals. Maybe this is why you get confused easily and it doesn't make sense.

3. According your link maybe the iPod index is more useful to your local wages:

Hours of work needed to buy an iPod nano:
New Yorker: 9
Beijinger: 73

4. Most of the locals that own homes either bought them when they were insanely cheap, up until recently (2k/m to 30-60k/m)....or were GIVEN to them by the government, universities, or companies. My ex-gf's family were all given homes. Mom, dad, grandparents.

5. Many locals are much, much more frugal than expats. Even a foreign student lives more extravagantly. Which means the cost of living is truly reflected.

Damn I'm hot. I'm on fire!

Sorry to disagree with you, but if the issue here is about expats living in Beijing, then why did you bring up the cost of living index, that Beijing ranks No 20 globally......

The index of cost of living is based on total population and not just expats.......

BTW, I know many expats who find living in beijing is a lot cheaper than Hong Kong....... and many find Hong Kong a lot cheaper than UK....... so it all depends how much money someone is making.......

Jesus H Christ...you are almost as dumb on this website are you are on BJstuff.

1. Read the effing OP. He talks about expats.
2. Cost of living has nothing to do with population. You can live in a god damn town of 1 and a burger could cost a million.

Damn I'm hot. I'm on fire!

Very strange, never heard of this before.........
Cost of living is based on the spending of the population, if there is no population, there will be no cost of living........

Expatriates in Beijing represent a very minor percentage of the total population, so you can't base yourself on the spending of expatriates only......

It's cheap as all hell if you know what you're doing. Obviously, a lot of dumbf***s in this thread don't though.

Re: Cost of Living in Beijing

If there's no population the cost of living will be exactly *infinity*.

And that's just for air.

Be happy you live on Earth.
