I would love to learn glass blowing. I emailed the " school house" in the north part of the city. They blow glass, but
they didn't get back to me about lessons.
Hi David,
Are you a stained glass hobbyist? I am also a glass hobbyist and I used to do warm glass (fusing and slumping). Very interested to having my own studio here - I tried many ways of finding sheet glasses but still have no luck. Seems like there are more suppliers in Shanghai but not Beijing. Seems like the safest bet is still shipping from US but I'll keep trying to search.
Anyone interested to check out "School House" near Great Wall together? I think they have glass blowing demonstrations but not sure if they have classes or if they can rent out their studio.
If anyone is interested to share space to start a glass hobbyist studio in Beijing together (and share some shipping cost if we have to ship glass from elsewhere), please let me know!
My friend got me interested in glassblowing. I miss the experience, but I am no good, just tried out trapping air and necking. Let me know what the costs are, and maybe we can use some old glass. At least for me, I would need a lot of practice.
I read that there's a new kind of kilm that is a lot more energy efficient. I've heard that if a person gets good at it, it can be very profitable. Start out by spinning dishes and cups, then blowing bottles. Develope a customer following and your stuff will be sold before you make it. It costs about $80 an hour to learn it in the US. I would be interested in contributing to a studio. Maybe in the "Area 789" district. PM me
Great, atomicneon2 and Batfink. So perhaps we can meet up some day and visit School House together? I'll try to get in touch with that place for some info in advance, and let you both know. What days work best for you?
I'll also PM you both for my number and see if we can connect.
No, I'm not even a beginner. I haven't done any hot glass work at all. Just observed. Start off giving your early, primitive works away as gifts to friends. As you progress in your skill, their friends will want to pay for your works. Cups and bowls have an intrinsic value. They're of use. Their value is added upon bc they're unique and they buyer has a personal connection to the creator. I think that the school house will only give demonstrations but not lessons. But I could be wrong. UTUBE woudl be a good source of learning technique.
Jadarite - I was blinded by work....snowed under last week so didn't have time for anything else. Hmmm....I thought the thread was leading to the possibility of perhaps chipping in to start a glass workshop together - you interested? as a beginner? if so, welcome to the club!
Atomicneon2 - you are right. I actually went to School House last weekend, not on purpose - was headed somewhere else but my friends eventually voted for Mutianyu at the last minute. Ran into the owner/partner - yes they will not offer any classes due to the small capacity of their workshop and glory hole.
So....still interested in starting a studio together? Or we can discuss via PM?

So, this is only for serious advanced artists? No beginners allowed in this club?
