We got a golden retriever a few years ago.

It was already at least two years and had had at least one litter of pups. But she was extremely well-trained, appeared very healthy and seemed to understand English commands, which led me to believe she'd had expat owners in the past who took proper care of her, even though I rescued her by paying 400 quai to a couple of thuggish looking teenagers.

Anyway, since she was already fully grown in seemingly good health, and appeared to have been well-cared for, I didn't bother to take her in to the vet right away.

Finally, after close to a year, I got around to taking her in. Vet found ALL KINDS of f-ing problems with her: worms, some kind of skin problem, I don't even remember what else. She's fine now and goes to the doc as often as she's supposed to, but if I'd waited I doubt she'd be around still.

In hindsight, I was an idiot for not getting her checked out immediately. It's a mistake I'll never make again.

OP, if you get a dog, YOU NEED TO TAKE IT TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY FOR A CHECKUP. If you don't, you're cruel and irresponsible.
