Tokyo/Narita airport--what to do for 5 hours?
We're going to have a 5 1/2 hour layover at Narita coming up. Anyone know if there's anything worth doing seeing in or near the airport during that time?
Remmy? You're the go-to guy for all things Jap, any ideas?

Well, the restaurants are okay, takoyaki not great ... most shops sell Japanese sweets, not bad, I shop a lot every time I go there, packaging is nice, as always. There's a CD shop, some gadget shops, usual airport stuff, one apparel, book store and they do fold a cover for you, super nice and a sushi place. B1, maybe, I think they've got a hair salon or something of the sort. Overall, airport not very big, but shopping and eating can take 2 to 3 hours.
If you take a taxi, 100 min or so, you can get to Akihabara, the best shopping location there is for gadgets and anime, manga stuff, great Curry Buns! But five hours is pretty short, I don't know whether you can make it...
I always take train/sub, that's about 120min to Akihabara so maybe taxi is a lot less, but taxi in Japan is expensive so I don't take them.

Yeah five hours isn't much but that was about all I had when I was there, which was enough time to get pickpocketed. Luckily, I had travel insurance and that took care of my lost property and my I.D. problems. So be careful whenever you stop for travel because anything can happen. Also, I think I had the sushi while there and I will vouch for that.
Have you thought about using travel health insurance for your next vacation?
