Salary for teaching English in Beijing and more

Hello.

I guess there is a thread about this subject somewhere on this forum, but there are SO many posts to be looking through. I know this post is a lazy solution, but the easiest though.

I will soon be arriving in Beijing where I would like to find a job as a personal English teacher. Therefore, I'm now searching for some infomation about teaching english in Beijing. Here are some questions I would like answers, if anyone out there is willing to share their knowledge on the subject:

Would you advise me to find a job before I get there, or is it possible for me to find a job when I get there within ... let's say weeks?

What salary should I expect if I choose private teaching?

Is it even possible for me to find a job as English teacher without speaking mandarin?

Finally, some infomation about me, so you will be able to answer my questions with my qualification in mind:

I'm 20 years old, male, and I have been traveling in China before, so I know the way the things work around there. I'm from Aarhus in Denmark and my language qualifications are fluent English (both writing and speaking), Danish (of cause) and French (not fluent, but able to communicate more than just basic stuff).

Thanks!

Re: Salary for teaching English in Beijing and more

They don't like your Enlglish here, Denmark English is passive and weak. Maybe you can get 20rmb per hour.

jensrathcke try to get an English teaching job before coming near China, as I expect you might find it more difficult to find one seeing as you are not a native speaker.... good luck

Just stay away and stop diluting the teaching corps in China. I am really tired of you hacks who think they are fluent but don't truly have a clue as to what English is really about.

How much time have you lived in Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or The United States? If you have lived less than 5 years consecutively in any of these countries I would not qualify you as fluent. I will not give you a job if you come to my school looking for a position.

Re: Salary for teaching English in Beijing and more

Hi jensrathcke,

I know that level of english in denmark is inredibly high. I have been studing in Aalborg for more than 3 years and i have experienced that.
most if the english teacher job offer are for nativ speakers however, i got quie few job offers to teach english - eventhough im polish. I quess its because here in beijing there are not many people who can speak ebglish and even if they can speak some, their accent is just terrible. so no worries, look for something through thebeijinger and im sure you will find sth good. its not as difficult as you mignt think. there are many job offer every single day.

good luck!

Please tell us you are not seriously teaching English here in China?

Life is like a jar of jalapenos, what you do today might burn your ass tomorrow

Re: Salary for teaching English in Beijing and more

Yes. Sadly it is probably true. Smooth88 is probably teaching English in China, although he did not expressly state this fact in his post. From my observatiions, he is representative of many, if not most of the uneducated,so-called foreign "English" teachers that have made China there refuge from the real world over the last few years. If Aga's post is representative of his English writing skills, and he is teaching English, then he should be genuinly embarrassed. I know intermidiate Chinese students that write better than this guy did in his post. I wonder if he was drunk at the time. His English writing skills are atrotious. I am often embarressed to be counted amoung the ranks of the English teachers in China. It is sad when the foreigners that are teaching English need to be taught English!! The current pool of "English" teachers in China is appalling to say the least. These teachers owe their students and China a sincere apology for their attempted deception. Thankfully China is finally trying to curb the influx of uneducated morons. The fact is that most Chinese learn English in spite of us.

So, to the 20 year old from Denmark...stay home!! We (qualified/professional)English teachers do not need another unqualified moron like you in China!!

Thanks for letting me vent about the truth.

Paragraphs, you need paragraphs. You said many different things in your rant that did not coincide with each other. You need a paragraph for each, individual, thought.

oh...got it. ha ha Big Grin . funny guys . Yeah, I was more concerned about my thought than my grammar. Yes, my paragraph structure is certainly sloppy here.
I am curious though about the spelling mistakes..please point them out for me. I see "embarressed" is spelled wrong. WOW!! I had no idea these posts were scrutinized for grammar mistakes so closely. It looks like I will need to be more careful in future posts. Maybe you will too...hehe.

Re: Salary for teaching English in Beijing and more

genuinly

atrotious

amoung

Also, you need to be careful about your spacing when typing. English is not Chinese.

Re: Salary for teaching English in Beijing and more

Idk why everyone in this thread is such a jerk haha. There are pretty much enough english jobs to go around in this city.

You can expect around 150 to 200 RMB an hour. I have taught here for 1 year and am pleased with it. If you get a full time job with a school the pay may be different. This is the basics...

Re: Salary for teaching English in Beijing and more

Tyler dear boy,
You joined TBJ forum and on day one and your first post, you committed a cardinal sin.
If you refer to the posts on the thread you will see that we (as in other forum contributors),do not deny that there are sufficient vacancies for anyone whom wishes to come to Beijing and teach English.
We merely have a heartfelt desire that the language that we teach to our students is of a high quality and with a degree of professionalism, that does'nt make us jerks it makes us conscientious.
Do us all a favour before you ponder the content of your second post,1) learn to read and 2) have a word with smooth88 above as your own written english could do with brushing up!

Re: Salary for teaching English in Beijing and more

Tyler.

It does seem like these guys are jerks. I noticed today, after looking through some older posts, that zhenlai has been doing the grammar police thing for several years. alawn1708 seems to be a bit newer and is following in the footsteps of zhenlai. There are probably a few more guys like this here as well. No doudt, these guys are probably good English teachers.

Like me, they are very aware that the current English teacher pool in China is made up of "hacks" for the most part. For the professional English teachers here, this abundance of hacks has created a sterotype that we must frequently overcome. In smany ways, I resent this and have vented this fact several times. Hacks also do a disservice to China and the students that depend upon them to teach English.

At first, like you, I was inclined to consider these guys to be jerks, but I took a look back at my posts after their critizisms and I certainly desreved the critizisms that I got. My spelling was indeed terrible and I certainly should have been more organized with my paragragh structure.

The point I am trying to make is that if you are teaching English in China and you are posting your views in a public forum frequented by English teachers, you can expect to be critized, and rightly so.

On the flip side, I hardly see how their efforts on this forum will contribute to a higher quality or higher degree of professionalism among English teachers in China. English teachers in China usually have a lot of free time on their hands, so, in one sense, I think their policing is more of a hobby than anything else.

Ok. That is my two cents worth. I think I have too much time on my hands. I should be studying my Chinese!!!

Take it from here guys!

“Who” and “whoever” are subjective pronouns; “whom” and “whomever” are in the objective case. As simple and important as that distinction is, many people have difficulty deciding on the proper usage of “who” and “whom” in sentences.

You're right, I didn't notice that. So spell and grammar checks would be a nice addition to this site. It was a double negative right?

Re: Salary for teaching English in Beijing and more

I like that i'm a non-native speaker of English and does better than the vast majority of native English teachers in China.

This might be unfair to some people, because i'm really not that good. But who am i to complain - I'm just reaping off the benefits from having blonde hair & blue eyes! Big Grin

No need to spell-check this post. I will never improve.
