Chinese Nationalism

Everytime I talk to an educated Chinese person, they always tell me about how much they hate their country and that they want to leave. When I talk to one that is from small town, less educated and less open to new ideas it is exactly the opposite. They think they live in the best country in the world.

For that second group of people, whenever I say anything about China, they get so mad an defensive. I will just ask them something to help understand their culture and they will get very mad. Like "why do they close exits and make the lines longer on the streets when there are more people?" Simple harmless question, their response is usually "you don't need to be here, you can go back to your country"

What's wrong with them? They must not really like their country if they are so defensive about it. If someone says something about America, I will just be like "ok". Thats it, just their f-ing perspective.

They call me 撸撸.
I am Mr. 撸管

Re: Chinese Nationalism

same in america, small town people are pig headed patriots and people who've left the country can take the criticism.

my boyfriend came home a few days ago - one of the smoggiest hazard days - wearing his bike mask and our neighbour, who btw was standing in the landing smoking a 555, told him he should go back to his own country. i doubt that dude has ever left china.

Trust me, it's so danger.

Re: Chinese Nationalism

People who don't like people telling people to get the f*** out if they don't like it need to get the f*** out if they don't like it!!!!!!

Galaxies don't move Sciency. They're in a fixed position.

Of course they do. They can spit, throw their rubbish on the ground, smoke wherever they like, disregard traffic rules, play mah joing and/or cards all day and generally do f**k all.

What's not great about that??

On the flipside- during a conversation about the dangers of eating anything here- a Chinese friend (who's leaving- probably permanently- for Canada soon) asked me:

"Why the hell do you stay here?!?"

Well, I came here to learn Chinese and I pretty much have the lingo down now, so.... one more year and I'm outta here.

Re: Chinese Nationalism

Maybe what you said made them feel ashamed and they were trying to hide their shamefulness.

That's generally valid.

Based on my personal observation, Chinese people in general are quite defensive, partly because of the culture and majorly caused by the propaganda which make people here less informed.

One personal example was: Back to the summer of 1989, and I just started my primary school, I didn't know exactly what the riot's about. But the teachers in school kept holding meeting even among to babble how vicious those rioters are, how desperately they wanted to jeopardize the "socialism in China", that was in a f-ing primary school for god's sake. Back then, I was quite, if not really, anxious, because in my perception, the rioters is bringing Capitalism, in which kids have no enough food and adults jump off the building all the time because of bankruptcy.

Alas, but who should we blame, the brainwashers or the brainwashees.

Thanks to the technologies, like internet or weibo, people are much better informed thus could think more rationally and independently. I'd say the potential of damage from nationalism/xenophobia is definitely much weaker than 5 or 10 years ago.

OP, I encourage you to talk and communicate with more and more these 2nd type people, with some subtle way of course(so you won't get hurt).

Re: Chinese Nationalism

As you said they are less educated people , so why do you care? I believe social achievements and progress are made by well-educated ones. So my suggestion is ignoring less educated and talking to more educated.

One Aidan,please.

your view is not just wrong (if you are educated, you should think about some history and reconsider it), but also quite alarming.

I'm trying to provide an alternative to make people feel less uncomfortable which is also my own way to face the reality.
As to find the root cause of it and even fix it, i have to say i am not that educated. Worried

Re: Chinese Nationalism

In China I have often found it is the educated ones that are the most nationalistic.

Hardly surprising when you see their school programs, warped history, saluting a flag before they know what a country is etc.. then back home every day to tv that reinforces the same thing.

So your alternative consists in excluding most of your country's people to having access to acknowledge and the right to know what really happens here and in the world around?
Well, you are just late, 共产党 has been doing it already since 1949 Smile

And then excuse me again, but alternative to what??

Re: Chinese Nationalism

so if you don't hate china then you are uneducated?

Re: Chinese Nationalism

Do you think it is different anywhere else? In the USA, children salute the flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance, and also get warped history. They are also taught that the US is the greatest country in the history of the world.

Re: Chinese Nationalism

Some of the biggest advancements and achievements were made by people with no or limited formal education.
Your equation somehow lacks.
EG a guy like Bill Gates or any of those IT geniuses (tbn) wouldnt even get a working visa in PRC as of their lack of a BA.

Education has nothing to do with ones ability to be creative or entrepreneurial.

Curious people....
and on a side note. whereas in china the education teaches you theres only one way from a to b, western systems tell you to find your own way and reasoning...

The United States of America is the greatest country in the history of the world.

Unless I am mistaken, whenever a foreign person cites some displeasure at something Chinese or relating to China, your usual response is for them to f-ck off back to their own country also! Quid pro quo as they say!

Re: Chinese Nationalism

In the US if you have a good position at work, good insurance, then it can be a good life. But if you happen to be unempolyed and sick without insurance, it is perhaps the last country you would hope to be in. If you jusdge a country by how they take care of their poor, the US is not ranked in the top ten for sure.

Choice is important in the US because there are the extremes. For example, you will find the BEST brain surgeon in the world, but also the worst you would not bring your dog to. So this makes choice of utmost importance.

The US government does brainwash their citizens similiar to the Chinese government and allot of other countries. We say the pledge of allegiance to the flag even befoe we fully understand what the *uck. But at the end of the day, all governments have their country in their best interest. One can only hope it is for the right reasons and for the betterment of the planet. But all too much the priorities get mixed up. The country comes before the world and then the trouble begins.

Whats good about the US is if you work hard, you can come from nothng and be a success. People are generally friendly and if u come home with a new Mercedes no one is going to be jealous, but rather be happy for you. But also no one will tell you how to get rich. You should figure this out on your own. Not Talking

All of us common people easily critice governments because we don't fully understand the problems nor do we have access to the same information the leaders of countries have.

Do not depend on getting the full truth from any government. The world would riot if the truth was told. Governments need you to do things to benefit them and thus promote or put out the propaganda or news in such a manner so your bleeding heart can decide no other way than to support their position.

If u dont understand this, you are naive to this world.

BIGGEST difference I have noticed is if you criticise the USA, it will lead to a discussion as to why you feel as you do and you nmight become enlightened as to you don't know all the facts. But if you criticize Chinese, the discussion ends and ignorance and defensive attitudes rule the day.

People in the US can openly and freely speak their mind and this cannot be a bad thing.

If your hungover and wishing you were dead, then its not so bad. If your hungover and wondering why your not dead it might be bad.
