Perhaps you should consider Finnish. You can get the book named Finnish for Foreigners. There are two books (part one and part two)and they come with cassettes or cd's.
I think the Finns are introverted, but much more willing to speak English compared to the Swedes, at least once the have enjoyed a few beers
There are only 5.2 million Finns in the world, so it means Beijing has at least 3 times as many people as the entire country of Finland. Very honest people and can be trusted.
If your hungover and wishing you were dead, then its not so bad. If your hungover and wondering why your not dead it might be bad.
I am Swedish and willing to undertake a language exchange "study partnership" if possible, as I need to learn mandarin/characters as fast as possible.
The only problem is that I will be arriving in Beijing in mid September as my PhD scholarship commence in the fall, which means that I won't be in China for another six months. If you have graduated by then or lost interest of "nordic languages" that is fine, but if you want we could get a language exchange going from the middle of September!
If you need/want to learn Swedish immediately, I could give you some links to good introductory books to the Swedish language. (I can tutor you both in Swedish and Norwegian, however my finnish and danish is very poor).
If Nordic mythology is something of interest it may also be covered as I major in religious studies
Let me know either way ^^
Oh by the way, I DO NOT agree with your observations The Equalizer, but I guess the sample size is as said....small xD And as a sidenote: Swedes are quite "famous" for their fluency in English
