Problems with Samsung Android phone

I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Gio running Android OS here in China.

When I got it home and tried to download apps from the Android Market, I had problems even being able to access the Android Market, but was mainly told that there was no Android device attached to my account.

There wasn't even an Android Market pre-installed app on the phone, and when I try to download Apps directly from certain sites, I receive a message saying I don't have permission to enter the site.

There is, however, a Samsung Market app - which is shite, and fully in Chinese characters with no obvious way of altering the langauge settings.

There are a bunch of pre-installed sh*t Chinese apps like UC Browser, Kaixin, RenRen, Alipay, QQ and a load of different SinaWeibo sh*t. None of which I have any use for, nor can I delete them.

I have read the Android and Samsung help forums, but haven't come across anyone having these kind of problems.

Obviously, I suspect this is because I bought the handset in China and for whatever reason it is blocked from accessing Android Market and similar apps.

Does anybody have any advice or know of a way that I can freely access and use the Android Market? Do I need to have the phone 'unlocked' or 'rooted' (both of which I have no idea about!)

Cheers in advance.

Download to your PC, then just transfer across.

^You can't download from there to PC, at least I've never been able to.

I did manage to find two versions of Market app last month elsewhere and downloaded to my PC then my Galaxy S but neither worked. I'm still looking for a solution too.

One tip I can give OP is that he can download the Amazon marketplace app. They don't have every app but it's better than nothing, and they also give away one free each day.

HuanChu - that was the first thing I tried, alas it didn't work. It seems the phone is pre-installed to actively block the Android Market for some reason.

Re: Problems with Samsung Android phone

I've continued to try to get my phone unlocked and/or rooted, or at least get Android Market to work, but no luck. If OP or anyone managed to succeed, please do tell.

In the meantime, in addition to Amazon Appstore, you can also download and install the Getjar market app which will work on my phone.

Other app sources I've tried, such as appbrain, will install but not work on my Galaxy S.

One idea is to get a Chinese friend to help you download all the good apps from the Chinese site. I have a friend who just got the Samsung Mini and said there are many good free apps but they are on that Samsung site in Chinese that you mentioned.

As for your phone, the Gio, what do you think? I was thinking about getting that phone. It would be my first smartphone so I wanted to start with something cheap and those are pretty cheap. I have been using the Nokia E63 for years and I am ready to make the jump to a smartphone. ( I may be the last one who still does not have a smartphone )

Re: Problems with Samsung Android phone

you buy this

If can do one thing, would be great.

Re: Problems with Samsung Android phone

Getting rooted is not enough MK, you must also have a firmware that doesn't block all Google apps. IE a non-Chinese one.
(I use a custom one that was actually developed by a Chinese dev though. Running a slightly modified version of the latest Gingerbread if that matters)

This is the same reason many great apps wont work on your phone such as Skype (maybe tom-skype the Chinese spy version works?)

The regular (Western) Android Market is also vastly superior to the Chinese one, which while it does have the occasional great free game, is also filled with shovelware, crappy rip-offs and softcore almost-porn apps (!!?)
It seems that you can get away with copying someones app and simply adding a script that redirects the proceeds to yourself on the Chinese Android Market.

I don't know how tech savvy you are but if you go to xda-developers.com that is the best resource for Android modifications on the net.

Search for your model number and start from there.
You can pm me specifics if you like, can't guarantee I'll be around though.

Actually you can use a program called "market enabler" to spoof a different region and get the English language version but like you say it's shite.

I had all the same problems as you btw and overcame them with custom firmware and rooting.

Check XDA-developers and good luck.

Same issue, once you've updated from a stock Chinese firmware this problem will go away and you'll be able to register your device with the market.

EDIT: Final thing, some devices were designed specifically for the Chinese market and cannot currently be modified.

I know, but I need to get it rooted before I can install a different firmware, right? I'm not sure I completely grasp the nuances between root/unlock/jailbreak.

Laughing It's like a microcosm of the Chinese economy in general, then?

I've been all over the XDA forum and the few mentions of the China Mobile version of my phone all result in no joy. I think I'm SOL. By the way, Skype--the real one, not the shitty Tom version--works fine on my phone for some reason, it's one of the few things I've had any luck with. Even Google maps doesn't work, just some shitty Chinese rip-off of it that I can't delete.

Another fine forum member is taking a crack at a solution for me, but if he hits a brick wall I'll send you the details. Thanks for the offer to at least take a look.

Re: Problems with Samsung Android phone

What is the exact model number of your phone?
Probably says it on the flash screen when you turn it on.

Yes you need it rooted first.

Rooting = getting admin access to your phone.

Unlocking = freeing your phone from being restricted to one carrier.

Jail-breaking = Ungaying an iPhone (if that's possible) but I don't own one so not so sure about that.

Re: Problems with Samsung Android phone

Okay, that's pretty much my understanding although I didn't realize jailbreaking only referred to iPhones.

My Samsung Galaxy is a GT-I9018. That seems to be the hangup; there are fixes for the GT-I9000 which is the NA version but those solutions don't work for my model, AFAICT.

Re: Problems with Samsung Android phone

I've tried rooting my Galaxy S and using Market Enabler, but still nothing. I bought mine in the US unlocked, so it's not a China-phone thing. I think the GFW just blocks all connections to the android market, perhaps as part of their "die google, die" campaign.

The best solution I've found is either to do all your app-downloading when you're out of the country... or to get a VPN that supports Android phones. It's not super convenient, but when I want a new app I just load the VPN on my android and usually have no problems.

Sometimes I feel it is maybe unbearable always be traditional Chinese girl.

Absolutely not the case, I can access and download anything from the android market just fine with my VPN off.

Like I said the firmware is the issue.
China Mobile/Unicom aren't the only c**ts you know.
It's not uncommon for American carriers to completely lock down the phone in exactly the same manner as seen here.
Making it so that you must access the market (or versions of it) through their own propitiatory bloatware crap that cannot be removed save via completely new firmware.

Re: Problems with Samsung Android phone

Ok, well it's definitely possible.
I'm seeing reports in Chinese of guys who have done it but they don't go into great detail and I couldn't be arsed dealing with them.

It looks like the I9018 is a China Unicom (I think?) build of a i9000, so there is a good chance that the kernel and firmware that is compatible with that phone may work on yours also.

So far you're in luck, sometimes the Chinese version of a phone cannot be safely flashed.

Have a look at this guy's rooting tool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436426

Claims it supports your model, obviously read up on safety and backup procedures before you do anything.

Check the kernel version currently in use on your phone (settings - about phone - Kernel Version) and try to download that exact version from somewhere as a backup.

I rooted my GT-i9100 as soon as I got it so I don't really remember the exact procedure but I recall needing to get that first.

I'm sure you've already figured out that you need Odin and stuff like that, the actual root procedure is very fast and easy once you have the right files, flashing a new firmware is a bit more hair-raising..... so once you have root be sure to install Titanium Backup.

Re: Problems with Samsung Android phone

No you dont have to root it.
Download stock/custom firmware
Download odin
Put phone in download mode
on PC open odin
select files as specified
connect phone
Flash firmware
Phone reboots which new firmware, complete with android market and minus shitty chinese adware.

I'll give it a shot, Aier, it sounds promising.

Thanks, I'll report the results soon.

I've tried that, it seems it's not that straightforward with my model.

It's very possible I did it wrong, but I tried three times with no joy and a fourth failure would have resulted in the phone being thrown across the room, so I cut my losses.

Re: Problems with Samsung Android phone

Ok Monkey King, I know I can be a bit of a douche ( or quite the douche)..
But tell me where you bought your phone,
What model number is it and I will get you the files needed.

Also, there are many reasons why an attempt to flash will fail. Primarily its because you havent installed the drivers on your windows machine properly. Did you install kies? That will install the drivers for you when you connect the phone for the first time after installing kies.

No worries, BB. That's why I gave you the winkie face in the other thread--I certainly wasn't flirting, you ugly fk.

I want to give Aier's possible solution a try, but if that doesn't work I'll send you the details, thanks for the offer.

There is literally no reason not to root.

You simply listed the steps that apply when putting a custom rom on any device.
You can't just throw anything on there it needs to be specifically compatible with your model.

Unless we find a rom that is known to work on his phone there is a risk.
Though it's possible (even likely) that roms compatible with similar models of I9000s will work.

Re: Problems with Samsung Android phone

You can also put in a sim card from a non-Chinese cell service. Then use wi-fi to connect to the web and browse to Google's marketplace. It will just check that you have a sim card and you will then be free to buy apps &/or download what you will. When done, go back to your Chinese Sim card.

Re: Problems with Samsung Android phone

^ the Market enabler app does that for you, no swapping needed.

It's handy for checking what apps are popular in different regions.

Sure. But I don't think that app is compatible with ICS at least, and I'm sure the phone needs to be rooted to make it work.

Re: Problems with Samsung Android phone

Yeah probably should be rooted.
Not sure about ICS compatibility, I'm waiting for the community to sort out all the kinks before I go near it (custom versions of course).

Have my phone just the way I like it at the moment and it was a pain in the ass to get it this way.
