what's the limit on how much RMB you can exchange at the airport (T3)?
the guy i've been using for years has left BJ for the holidays and
in all the years i've been here
somehow i've managed to never do this with anyone else but him.
im leaving on the 17th so i don't want to spend too much time asking around.
i don't care too much about getting the best deal so im thinking
just go to the airport and exchange a lot of rmb.
so, what's the limit?
i remember a friend did this at the airport once but
i think they wouldn't let him exchange a lot...less than 10k i think...
i'll be needing more than that...
oh yeah? well, let me ask you this: shut up!

Why not just walk into a bank or two here in town before you go to the airport? Everyone here seems to always say you can do it at any bank.
I need to change some to U.S. dollar in about 3 months, pm me your guy!

You don't have a VIP card at your bank? I can pretty much walk into any BoC and never wait more than a few minutes.

Not sure what the limit is exactly, but I am sure it is relatively limited.
Your best bet is to have a few Chinese friends give you a hand and buy your dollars at a nearby bank.

Although the RMB is not supposed to be freely tradable, I know you can walk into a highstreet travel agents in England and change RMB into pounds sterling. It might be easier to exchange RMB abroad than you think.

Check the exchange rate, though. Except when in Hong Kong, most places overseas where I have seen you can exchange RMB give you horrible rates.

They treat RMB like Monopoly money abroad.

Thomas Cook is offering 9.08 for 1 GDP with no extra commission.
http://www.thomascookmoney.com/
The "official" rate is 9.65

So I guess Bank of China would give you about... 9.4?
Could be worth doing if you are over the daily limit but not exchanging tens of thousands.

Looks like you're sorted out, LK, but I'll go ahead and second the recommendation that you just have a Chinese friend or two exchange the money for you as the best way to avoid the daily exchange limits for foreigners.
You don't even need to be coy about it. You both go to the counter, you hand your RMB to your friend, he/she hands it to the teller.
I guarantee the teller won't blink. Kind of ridiculous really.

Re: what's the limit on how much RMB you can exchange at ...
Wrong.
You must exchange your RMB into foreign currency before it can be sent abroad. Even if PayPal would work -- which it will not -- they charge not only the normal margin for currency exchanges, but also an approximately 5% cross-border fee.

You can exchange upto USD5,000.- at the airport ( equivalent RMB approx. 30k).
If you have exchanged USD into RMB ( upto USD50k in a year ) you can use the exchange receipts and buy Usdollars ( equivalent of RMB exchanged earlier )at any Bank Branch which is authorized for Forex dealings.
To avoid lines at Big four, you may try China Postal Savings Bank which has a separate counter ( and token number ) for forex dealings.
Hope it helps !

A foreigner can bring cash and change it at the Bank of China for RMB. Foreign money can be exchanged in China through traveler's cheques, currency conversion at banks and hotels. Credit cards can also be used. What follows is a more detailed explanation. pedestrian accident lawyer
