Got new passport, F-visa still in old one, should I cut the corner off the old passport when leaving China?
Recently received a new passport and have been told that I should "invalidate" my old passport (which still has the F-visa inside)
Leaving China this week, should I cut the corner off before presenting it to the border?
A little concerned that might present problems with the visa, but also concerned that carrying 2 passports might not go down too well either...
Appreciate any advice you can offer, thanks!

NO, do not alter any passport. If you need to carry or show your passport and visa carry both passports. It may seem inconvenient but that is what you need to do.

Thanks for the advice, but is it legal to carry the old passport if I have not cut the corner off? It has been electronically cancelled but other than that looks legit. Nothing ever seems to go smoothly with Chinese authorities and just concerned that they might view this as carrying a false passport...

I have been in your situation and although it will take them some time to look over your documents, they will realize why. Just hand them your new passport and open your old one to the page where your visa is. It will explain itself.
If you are really worried just go to your embassy and ask them to cancel the old passport.

Good information, my passport expires soon ( has it really been 12 years? ) and I was wondering what will happen to my old passport. Sounds like they give it back? I know I read I have to hand it in when I apply for the new one, I just thought they would take the visa page out and put it into the new one.
I am late on some old student loans, I hope they even let me renew my passport! This China experiment might be over before I am ready to leave!

Yes they do give it back to you. My collection of American Passports is an interesting thing. All those visas and entry and exit stamps certainly do prosper fond memories.

I am going to be making the HK passport stamp run in about 3 months and I will have two passports, my new one and the old one with my visa, I can't wait to see their face when I hand them two passports. I hope this is something they see from time to time and it does not freak them out too much.

They will just look at you with disgust. Then they will stamp the correct passport and send you on your way.

I am waiting to get my new passport from the embassy sometime this week but I just noticed they gave me a small notice with my receipt that states my visa is not longer valid to travel after they cancel my old passport. Is that right? I have to go get a new visa after I get my new passport? Or do I have to have it transfered into my new passport? It is still valid for 3 months!

Re: Got new passport, F-visa still in old one, should I cut ...
On the day you receive your new passport, u will receive a dated envelope from ur embassy. You have exactly 10 days to go to the PSB, show them that dated envelope, and get your visa transferred to ur new passport.
Let me repeat, ur visa (no matter what date it says it expires) is invalid 10 days after u receive ur new passport, unless u go to the PSB and get it transferred to ur new passport.
Whatever visa you have in an expired passport doesn't count for sh*t after ten days. If u do that u r here illegally in the eyes of the chinese government, and will be penalized just the same as someone who has overstayed their visa.

Hi there.
My F visa is about to expire in 2 weeks. This is the first time I need to extend it. I got the first 6 months F visa at TradersLink, I was there today and they told me they couldn't extend my visa without an invitation letter from the company that provided my visa the first time or second option was to leave Beijing, to go to Hong Kong to get a visa there. I don't work for this company anymore so I can't get this invitation letter from them and I don't want to leave Beijing. Is anyone else having same issues with their F visa extension? Can anyone help? Agent or agencies, is that possible to get the F visa extension without leaving Beijing?

Thanks, I got it now, I for some reason after reading the above posts thought I would just be carrying around two passports until my visa expired.
Now I just have to figure out where to do it? Any old PSB station (like the one where I get my residence permit each time) or that main PSB building where I got my visa?

Re: Got new passport, F-visa still in old one, should I cut ...
Where are you from? Are you sure they told you to go get your visa in Hong Kong? I think you misunderstood them. I have had to go to Hong Kong many times to get my passport stamped, but not to get a visa. You know you have to leave the country at least once a year to renew F visas. So they can not renew it until you get your passport stamped showing that you left the country and Hong Kong counts as leaving the country.
So I think they can renew your visa here (if you are American, I do not know about other countries) you just need to leave the country and come back first.

Re: Got new passport, F-visa still in old one, should I cut ...
I am from Albania but i don't think this is the issue. At TradersLink today they told me that my 2 possibilities are:
1-get an invitation letter from the company that I used to work for (because my visa was recorded to a number corresponding to the company I used to work for) and since I can't get that invitation letter from my company they told me 2- the second option to go to Hong Kong but maybe it is as you say, maybe I misunderstood the lady.
Anyway this is my first extension and I have been in Beijing for just 6 months, so is it really neccessary to go to Hong Kong or there is some agency that can extend my visa without an invitation letter and without leaving Beijing?
I think my former company told to TradersLink not to extend our visas, because we are 4 who quit job from that company and having the same problem.
