I've searched around and found the usual chaos..

My passport is with the government getting a new residence permit done and I'm not gonna get it back until after the holiday. I had been planning to travel but the delay may screw that up. At least Beijing is nice and peaceful this time of year.

I've heard I can use the visa processing receipt to register at hotels.. Is this always true? or at least most of the time? Does anyone have any tips for this?

Has anyone tried to use this receipt to travel under the new high speed train regulations? Am I doomed to taking one of those deathtrap long distance buses?
