What do foreigners tend to generalize when it comes to Chinese people?
Nice to meet you all!
Sometimes it bugs me a little when some foreigners complain about how bad Chinese people behave when they see someone behave in a less-decent way.
The thing is, though there are indeed some Chinese, or to say, a lot of Chinese people who don't have good manners on some occasions, it's still an individual thing instead of a collective behavioral pattern.
I think when foreigners say that Chinese people are blah blah, whether good or bad, they know it very well it's just about all Chinese people. But when they describe it, it somehow always sounds a little generalized.
This generalization of course is not just between foreigners and Chinese people, in fact, it's very common. Sometimes I jump to conclusion about the feature of a certain group just based on a single member's behavior.
But still, when I saw some posts here talking about "Chinese people don't" or"Chinese people ***", it still makes me feel a little uncomfortable. As to me, I am a well-educated, decent Chinese and I don't like to be categorized into a certain stereotype, no matter it's good or bad.
So I really am hoping to see less posts titling "Chinese people sh*t in the park"or"Xinjiang Province is the terrorist nest" this kind of thing, or Chinese people posting on Chinese forums "Lao Wai(Foreigners)use handkerchief""Lao Wai pee on the street".
Have a nice day!

Let's make a deal. You tell Chinese people to stop generalizing about Foreigners and Foreigners will stop generalizing about Chinese people. All people do it. You cannot stop or change it.

Exactly what I said in the post. It's very judgemental and reckless to generalize either Chinese or foreigners.
And this shouldn't be a competition about generalization, but a start to make people be more objective and less close-minded. I argue about the generalization on some Chinese forums as well.

Re: What do foreigners tend to generalize when it comes to ...
There is a difference between generalisation based on prejudice "aloooo, laowai" and what might be misunderstood as generalisation (bad driving, spitting)--based on things that are definitely widespread and mentioned by people coming from many countries.
Although.... it would be interesting to see it discussed on a Chinese forum, again not a generalisation to note that the vast majority don't speak English, have never been abroad and would probably view any other Chinese person's opinion on foreigners with much scepticism.

Re: What do foreigners tend to generalize when it comes to ...
here's one point that always justifies, TO ME, anyone saying stuff like 'chinese blah, blah, blah...'
in any other country i've traveled or lived in, i would feel comfortable to tell somebody to:
'please don't yell so loud.
please stop smoking in the elevator.
please do not spit in the restaurant.
please do not fire the firecrackers in front of the building.
please do not push me, i will get off on the next station too.
please don't let your kid piss right here.
...'
AND when i say it i would VERY RARELY expect the other person to go crazy about it
AND i would expect most people around me to support me if what im asking is reasonable.
in china, if i ask this from most people, i expect them to start yelling:
'LAOWAI! CAO! GO BACK HOME! f***!'
AND i expect no other chinese will say or do anything about it.
IN FACT i expect most chinese to join and yell 'CAO NI MA LAOWAI! GO HOME!'
EVEN if they also minded the loud, smoking, pissing, annoying chinese character.
so IF there are all these chinese people who hate
the uneducated, uncivilized behavior we see in this city every day, they should say/do something.
when you don't, and you don't,
non-chinese people assume most chinese don't mind it, i.e. they're the same.
stereotypes exist for a reason.
oh yeah? well, let me ask you this: shut up!

So... there's two kinds of people in the world, right? 中国人 and 外国人
But generally I do agree with you. If you live in Beijing but haven't travelled extensively in China you should probably talk about “Beijing people drive like …”, “Beijing people often do…”
But everybody who lives on this planet generalises, that's how we are able to survive each day. If a Chinese woman tells me I'm handsome then I know it doesn't mean anything - it's just an empty compliment. That's a generalisation but it's also totally true. Every book you read about international relations will be entirely generalisations. The important thing is not to be really f-ing stupid. Then you'll probably figure this kind of stuff out fairly easily.

Do agree however, when one generalizes, one can expect to be wrong. There will always be the exception to the rule, but these kind of generalizations happen for a reason. There is generally some kind of substance behind it.
I also have to ignore it, like we all do, because I hear alot that all americans are ignorant to the world, or full of false superstitions, or prejudices, or loud talking.
On a serious note however, This is a fair comment and a good post...it bothers us all when we hear a generalization and we feel we do not do those type of things, yet we are thrown into the group.
Maybe someone who generalizes should say "all Chinese, except Cathy Lee..." By your photo I do not think you would be seen spitting on the floor, but again looks can be deceiving. Who really knows?
At some point in time, I think most intelligent people learn to not generalize. I'm just wondering is it because they mature, or become wiser, or they have travelled more, or why?
How much does the biased reporting in the news have to do with nuturing of these biased statements? For example, I saw one broadcast which showed the ghetto zoomed in and if they would have went to a wide lens or further back, they would have shown quite a nice living area and not been able to make their point.
Please enjoy this special time of year in China.

One thing I forgot. Are you asking "What" or "Why" because the title has what, yet the majority of the answers seem to be why...

Agree!
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When elsewhere do as they do there." I hope we are all rational beings, knowing how little a part our roles are (as foreigners) to change the whole society of China.

A huge part of it is the language barrier. It is hard to see people as individuals sometimes when for the most part you are restricted to really basic conversations (yes, I know many people here have much better Chinese than me).

Chinese generalizations are especially the worst considering that they lump everyone in the world that isn't Chinese into one category called 'Foreigner' as if there were only two nations in the world.

Re: What do foreigners tend to generalize when it comes to ...
Since the first year I live with foreigners till right now, it's already 7 years. All my friends and students have never ask me any awkward questions about china or complain chinese in front of me. I do appreciate. But that doesn't mean that they are totally accept everything in here. After i go travelling in the world, I found the people are really repect Chinese. But for me, even i am in a civilized country, I still feel a lot things uncomfortable. Sometime I complain too. The culture is a huge gap between the different countries people. And I am sure part of the reason why we feel uncomfortable when they criticize china because we grow up in a world without freedom speech. And all the information we got is how great we are. So now, some people when they start to use another voice to talk. We can't handle that.
I went to Europe with my fiancé. We had a awful fight after I criticize the European are so slow. See, seem reaction. People is hard to admit that They are bad and they are wrong. Luck thing is he didn't say go back to china:)
I am sure a lot of foreigners got judge when they stay in china. Its also hard for them. He went to my famliy. There is one of my aucle doesnt even want to see him. No hello no shake hands. Thats a huge prejudice. I feel thats not fair for him.
So without communicate, we can not make the good relation work in china between us. basic on nothing just judge people. This is f-ing wrong. Let's start to talk and try to know each other. Find the reason behind the fact. Thats what we should do.

There are stupid people from the US too, of course, but I find European and Chinese reactions similar in certain situations.
