Newbie Question
Hi all!
I'm moving to Beijing for a year in March and am scratching my head over the best way to get my fix of 'poisoning' western TV. (Rather than living with 'selective' chinese programming...) I have a few ideas but was hoping for some advice on which ones work best from the die hards on here and what you currently use?
Slingbox - will this actually work well enough through the GFW to be viewable?
VPN - again, will using a foreign based VPN actually be fast enough to stream content?
Satellite / IPTV - seems expensive for what it is and a tad shady, but does it work well enough?
Another suggestion I've been told is to keep a PC on back in the motherland and remotely login to it and watch things online that way.
Does anyone have any experience of doing any of the above in China? Any advice would be much appreciated, send me a private message if need be.
Cheers

Re: Newbie Question
As for your question I am sure there are many options. One thing I will say though is that anything using the internet will suck! The internet here is slow, unreliable, and censored. So with that said I do watch some sporting things on cable tv here, you also have CCTV English channel, yeah it is mostly news and culture shows.
I do keep up on all new shows that I like and recent movies here in Beijing. It is a little bit of a pain in the ass sometimes but I download everything, using bit torrents.
there, oh, one more insult,,, you are a ......oh, nevermind, I am on holiday here, cheers to everyone!

HAHA! Cheers chaofan, I finally have closure!
Thanks for your response too, it seems like the pi$$y chinese internet is gonna hinder any option anyway then. Damn it, damn it to hell!

Re: Newbie Question
What specific programmes do you mean?
And if you are coming on a decent contract, you should be able to get an apartment that has some Western channels.
Oh, and since you asked for it-
You are coming to Beijing for a single year, and your main concern is that you will still be able to watch crappy TV?
That's the fekkin spirit!

Re: Newbie Question
I'm guessing the vast majority of expats here rely on torrents. That's definitely the only thing I use.
As you mention yourself, every other option is subject to interruption due to shitty internet.

Re: Newbie Question
I would suspect the vast majority of expats wouldn't even know what torrents are MK.
Wouldn't buying box series DVD's be more popular?

Re: Newbie Question
That is a fine idea but what about the shows that are current? I use torrents to watch shows the same day they have been shown in the U.S.

Re: Newbie Question
Cool, I'll have to get U Torrent on the case when I get out there then.
I'm going to set up a tower in my apartment back in UK and connect to it via VPN / RDP to 'open up' some sites. Will see if the connection is good enough for streaming too, if it doesn't work, then feck it.

Re: Newbie Question
If you want to use torrents after you get Utorrent go to eztv.it or kickasstorrents.com or btjunkie.com and download the torrents. There are other sites as well. These are just the three that I use most.

Re: Newbie Question
I think torrents are probably better known than you seem to think, although I can't say I know that for a fact.
I would agree that DVD boxed sets would be the next best option, though, for anyone who isn't familiar with torrents.
I'll also add for OP's benefit that Youku.com seems to have some decent streaming content, although I've heard it's not as good as it used to be. I've never used it myself.

Re: Newbie Question
Torrents take ages to download and it's only when you've downloaded the whole thing that you realise it's overdubbed in Russian or whatever. Also, I don't know what I want to watch!
You can download a program called Funsion to browse stuff them stream and download at the same time. They don't seem to have added much content recently but I watched Boardwalk Empire and the new Sherlock Holmes on there.

Re: Newbie Question
I've never had that problem. If you use eztv.it or kickasstorrents.com they tell you what language it is.

Re: Newbie Question
Its going to get far, far worse if the PTB get their way... that SOPA plan masked a huge executive order that Bam Bam just penned through, the mainstream news aren't even covering it.

Basically, if someone in one country objects to content on a site in another..... this is the hard bit to believe, but a fact.... they can order it shut down. They are basically going to crush the internet!
Of course there's no New World Order.... splutter splutter

Re: Newbie Question
CZ is right on the funsion thing.. Www.fengxian.com I think? Only works for pcs and you have to download a player but they have a reasonable amount of content to be streamed, at least everything mainstream, movies, tv. Wouldn't help with sports matches or anything I don't think though..
Trust me, it's so danger.

Re: Newbie Question
Yes, like I said, torrents are the way to go, I just finished watching the first season of Hell on Wheels, not available on DVD yet in Beijing, sure it will show up soon. Have not missed a single one of Howard Sterns shows for the last 3 years in Beijing. As for the person talking about you don't know what you get until you download it that is not true at all. Like Zhenlai said the sites tell you which ones are good and what is in the torrents. I will ad Monova.org to his list, I only use that one and Kickasstorrents with no problems. I mean you can even watch the Tonight Show or David Letteman the same day it is shown in the U.S.

Re: Newbie Question
Can anyone download during the day? My first two years here it was not a problem but now I can only download at night while I am sleeping. I have complained to the internet service provider and they said that is the only time I can do it. Be careful when you choose your itnernet, I have been told some will not let you download torrents at all so ask first. How the hell they control that I have no idea but then again this is China, they control whatever they want when it comes to the internet.

Re: Newbie Question
I use a locally based vpn. I'm not worried about the loss of security as I work under the assumption that all activity is monitored anyway.. I can watch video from any site that is viewable from the states with no problems at all from my home 2M connection and my 6rmb/month vpn.
