Criminals in my Chinese family. What can I do?

So I have not posted here in a very long time. I spent quite a few years in BJ in the golden years before 2008 and left in 2009.

Yes I married a Chinese girl, had beautiful kids and moved back to my home country. And everything was great until about 6 months ago.

Out of the blue my Wife's cousin shows up. In my Wife's family she is the top dog simply because she is the wealthiest, and they all seem to fear her.

She had shown up with about a million dollars in cash with a plan to put this safely away here in real estate. Now that in itself is not a bad thing, except that she began to leverage my wife by saying she would look after her parents back in China and that my Wife basically had to do what she said or else.

When I began to question our cousin about this and where the money was coming from the situation quickly degenerated to the point of insults and threats. I'm actually afraid for my kids and could never let them return to China at this point.

Now I know that this money is not legitimate. It's basically untaxed stolen loot that she has been able to wash through her family members who work in banks there. In Western terms what she might say is her family business is nothing more than racketeering.

So what can I do. I feel the police here are not going to be effective in dealing with this. I am getting a lawyer to draft a letter of complaint to the Chinese consulate here but that may not go anywhere. Here there are ways to make complaints to the taxation authorities about things like this. Are there any such hotlines in China?

My goal here is that we are not to be subject to any more threats, and more than anything that she is not able to visit or immigrate here.

Sorry to hear about ur scummy Chinese inlaw situation.

You never specified which country you're in (or what kinds of demands she's making), but I'm concerned that if she has that kind of money at her disposal, you may have a hard time keeping her out.

All I can say is don't give her an inch, til she learns who the *real* boss is (you!). Remember wealth isn't the ultimate power. And, hey, maybe there's a diplomatic middle-ground to balance out at (and cash-in on?)

Re: Criminals in my Chinese family. What can I do?

It's better to keep the authorities out of that. You won't get much help anyway. She hasn't broken any laws and they are not going to cross any borders into her country to do anything about it too.

Threats and insults are only words. I'm sure if you stand your ground you guys can work out some kind of win win situation.

But you lose if you go to the authorities.

If your hungover and wishing you were dead, then its not so bad. If your hungover and wondering why your not dead it might be bad.

Re: Criminals in my Chinese family. What can I do?

What does your wife think about the situation?

My wife had troublesome cousins for a while-she was really mean to them-totally chewed out one at our wedding (much to my embarrassment "Don't worry Mum and Dad. They're just chatting. Chinese people always chat like that").

God knows how you will be able to do anything about your situation without the support/guidance of your wife.

Re: Criminals in my Chinese family. What can I do?

Go to the police and have your cousin banned from entering your home country ever again.
She's threatening your family.

Other than that, you could blackmail her and have her do things for you.

If can do one thing, would be great.

Re: Criminals in my Chinese family. What can I do?

Threatening family members can get a restraining order against the person at the very least. Proving the money is dirty can get the person kicked out of the country. Just look at that Chinese businessman that got deported from Canada.

Re: Criminals in my Chinese family. What can I do?

Now I know that this money is not legitimate. It's basically untaxed stolen loot that she has been able to wash through her family members who work in banks there. In Western terms what she might say is her family business is nothing more than racketeering.

Do you really have the proof or is this just your suspicion?

Not so easy to prove this money is gotten through illegal activities when you are trying to do this from one country to within another country, even if you have the authorities involved. The burden of proof is on you.

You could get a restraining order, yes. But first you should know is your wife willing to do this also and willing to collaborate against her, because here is needed some kind of proof also.

I would ask myself is it really worth it?

I still keep my stance. Going to the police will just be a waste of time, perhaps give you false hopes, and at the end of the day will not reveal anything.

Its better you take her alone and have a talk, one on one, without even your wife present, and see how the future unfolds after this. This can be the first step of your action plan, with authorities becoming involved as a desperate last resort, because you lose if you involve them for sure. Hello?

Your ultimate goal is to have her leave you guys alone, perhaps forever plus one more day, so if it was me, I would first have a private "meeting of the minds" with her.

If your hungover and wishing you were dead, then its not so bad. If your hungover and wondering why your not dead it might be bad.

Re: Criminals in my Chinese family. What can I do?

seriously-why don;t you roll with it and use it to your advantage?

family helps family out, of course she was insulted when you questioned her.

make a deal, where's the skin off your nose? it's how things work

"Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats."

Re: Criminals in my Chinese family. What can I do?

A guy with the username shoplifter who lists his location as "I predict a riot" complaining about criminal behaviour?

What happened tough guy?

Re: Criminals in my Chinese family. What can I do?

Thanks to those who have made legible comments.

I see most of you seem to think it's possible to be conciliatory and talk it out. I think I would need to have a lot more persuasion to see the value in talking with someone who sees me and my kids as merely a resource to be exploited for her own aims.

Because of her working towards the removal of my kids to China without my approval I have been able to restrict the children's ability to apply for a passport here and I suppose the next step may be a restraining order if she should ever return to my home country.

Those of you who have been in China a long time may know the type of older woman who is simply incorrigible. Well my problem is much more difficult as it that sort of person with a great deal of resources to cause trouble. There is no way they are going to be willing to get anything less than their own way etc.

I know that what I have done with the authorities in my home country is pretty much the limit of what I might achieve. I guess what I should have made clear in my first posting is what might be done in China?
Isn't there some sort of tax evasion or corruption hotline these days?
