I was told before I came to BJ, that Chinese people spat alot.

I thought it was a myth, but today, my first day here, I must have encountered over 1,500 spitting people! On the streets, almost everyone I passed hocked a big lugie on the sidewalk. Tonight as I am in my apartment, I can hear my neighbors on every side hocking and spitting all night long! I even heard someone hock and spit from another apartment building! What is this about??

Cultural shock. Don't listen too much to any preconceived notions. In no time you will have the hang of this skill too. Please try to develop your own style and don't copy anyone else's spitting technique.
And also do not let the noise of honking horns disturb your peace of mind, ruin your day, stress you, or take you hostage. Just imagine every group of vehicles honking is a new "tune" or a different orchestra you are hearing for the first time. Everyone group of vehicles honking truly produce a different sound if you listen closely enough.
If your hungover and wishing you were dead, then its not so bad. If your hungover and wondering why your not dead it might be bad.

Not a chance. I always carry one of those clicking counters in my left palm (left, not right) so I can count people who do things. It was exactly 1,500 people.

So interesting! 2 years ago, I was feeling similar to this. Nowadays I've grown rather numb towards it. Sometimes its such gross practice, that it just amuses me. After 2 years, I still marvel at the fact of there apparently being a true need of scraping one's throat at such loud volumes, mouth open. Hilarious!

I am not a fan of the huge green ones they spit and remain lodged to the side of the public sinks.
I've had friends visit my home and do the nose blow thing into my sink. I then tell them to wash the sink. They're shocked when I demand this.
