Musician/Singer Pay and Venues
I've just moved into Beijing, and though I'll be making my living as a teacher, I'd like to play a few gigs every now and then at some of the bars or other venues around town. Two questions about that.
1.) What should a singer/songwriter expect to earn playing music in Beijing, if anything?
2.) Are there any bars/venues in the area that feature solo artists?
Also, I've toyed with the idea of putting a band together, with both expat and Chinese members. My roots are in folk and rock music, but my passion is for all music, and I'd be interested in taking part in any project that sounds interesting. I play acoustic guitar and sing.
Thanks,
Kaleb

Re: Musician/Singer Pay and Venues
Making a living on just music is not that easy, especially not for foreigners. Once you're established and can break into the circuit of corporate gigs, maybe.. but until then, not really!
There are plenty of bars/places where a solo musician can play with pay that varies from a few free beers to a couple 100 rmb.. check the events section or my blog for some ideas.
Other than that, get over to some of the open mic nights around town and meet other musicians. start jamming with some locals too.
Cheers
