Fireworks = pure selfishness
I used to think the locals let off fireworks for enjoyment.
Load of crap. It's all about good luck. Personal good luck.
This explains why:
*the fireworks aren't colourful/interesting/creative. They are just loud, exploding ones, like bombs. Selfish.

*your neighbour has no trouble letting off fireworks at 6 a.m. (as long as he's lucky, screw everyone else). Selfish.
*no-one ever thinks to pick up all the debris and crap they create. Selfish.
*not a second thought about the environment. Selfish.

Re: Fireworks = pure selfishness
Remmy...? You do realize Chinese fireworks have a tradition of being loud to scare evil spirits? Western fireworks favor bright lights since they are public celebrations and displays?
Maybe this will help...

Correct. One is a public celebration (i.e. for the community/nation), one is to scare evil spirits to bring good luck on one's own family (selfish).

Hahaha, it seems remmyM is really frightened by the great noise of fireworks.
Why do men lie to women so easily? Just because a man just needs to give the start, then the lie is done by the woman herself.

Re: Fireworks = pure selfishness
I assure you RemmyM is not frightened by the noise from the FIRECRACKERS. He is irritated by the uncivilized behavior displayed by the people when they are setting them off.
Please note: Fireworks are beautiful wondrous things that we all love to see and enjoy. Fireworks are only beneficial to be used in the evening after dark. Firecrackers are useless things that only make noise and annoy people.

ya, I'm quite sure the guy who lit 4 lines of those gigantic firecracker m80 things(at the same time) and yelled "这个厉害“ while trotting away.. had the sole intention of scaring away the "evil spirits".

Re: Fireworks = pure selfishness
This is China. It's a more selfish society - partly by necessity.
While there's no excuse for some of the instances of selfishness (IMO firecrackers at 5am are a case in point), people grow up with a more selfish mentality, as in this country, you've got to be more self centred to get by. Unlike in more affleunt western democracies there are no 'consolation prizes' in China for Chinese people. You either exploit and take advantage where you can or you be exploted (ie work a 1000rmb job your whole life, live a tiring, miserable exitence, and be looked down on by your peers). There's little middle ground to be had. No government hand outs, job centres or benefits. Just a miserable existence on the breadline. Existence here is tougher than in the West - hence the selishness.

So why don't Indians behave the same way? they've got a corrupt society, are equally poor and a comparable population. About the meanest they get during festivals is throwing coloured powder at each other, climbing up ropes or sticking coat hangers through their noses. Thais throw water bombs, again its not an easy to get anywhere society..

Good point. I love Indians, even if they seem wary of whitie (you know, the whole colonisation thing).

Believe in god. Believe in love. Believe in myself. Hold faith tight no matter what kind of person I used to be and what challenge is waiting for me. Rainbows are always there after the rain.

Re: Fireworks = pure selfishness
They piss me off just as much as you guys, the firecrackers, but I have to say this year was marginally better.
There were less of them, I think, than last year. Where I live anyway, which is in walking distance of Chaoyang Park.
I know they increased the price of them this year. I hope they continue to do so, doubling or tripling the price of firecrackers will hit the explosive-loving-savages (you too, laowai!) where it hurts and maybe they'll stop with the voodoo banging.
It's only the really uneducated, nong min-type Chinese who are out in the street with spools of firecrackers. If it's unaffordable, it will stop.
I also have no problem with actual fireworks when used moderately.
