There's better, cheaper elsewhere

Review of Union Bar and Grille

I'd really give this a 2.5 star rating, since it's not that terrible, just not that great.

Summary: If you want to pay waaaay too much for a hamburger, go to Rumis. It's a much better hamburger (and cheaper actually). Otherwise, go to Paul's Steak and Eggs or Grandma's Kitchen for a cheaper burger that will still taste good, and at least be hot and have the proper ingredients.

A few of us went to this place last week for some dinner. The interior decoration is reasonably nice, but the restaurant suffers from that same annoyingly obsequious service that all ridiculously overpriced places here in the 'jing seem to have.

As a specialty New York-style meat/sandwich place, the selection on the menu is intentionally limited, and the sandwiches do seem to be the "ticket item", so we were a little surprised when they told us they had no more hamburger buns and asked if we would mind ciabatta instead? I kept my order, but my friend changed his to a club sandwich of some sort.

We started out with some chicken wings, which despite the weird presentation (think rack of lamb), were quite tasty -- if somewhat fatty. The blue cheese sauce was so stuffed with celery and carrots that it was basically unusable.

The basic cheeseburger with the ciabatta substitution was fine.

The French dip sandwich tasted nice, but was positively miniscule, and lacking in the meat department (which basically just leaves the tiny bread and gravy.

The club sandwich is a pretty different take on the club sandwich, but seemed to be pretty good. The fries they serve here were barely warm, but properly salted so you could imagine them being delicious.

Everything on the menu had a hefty markup over Beijing's usual overpriced-restaurant fare, and the 10% service charge at the end was also an unpleasant surprise.
