I was a dedicated denizen of Ginkgo in its former manifestation, Room 101, and was worried that I might be disappointed in the new place - it was my local bar and I thought it might be going too upmarket, and would no longer be a place you could just hang out. But on visiting the other night I found a great airy space that feels a lot better than the old place,(it's lost that strange plastic upholstery smell that it used to have!) but is just as welcoming. The food menu is still being tested (they are in the soft opening stage) but I tasted a onion tart that was totally sublime and enjoyed some house red as well. Browsing the rest of the menu was encouraging - lots of well priced but unusual looking dishes - variations on a southern french/ Mediterranean feel. They aren't planning to be open 24 hours anymore (which I mourn), but promise to stay open till late (or the last person leaves). The only thing I could complain about is the name - Ginkgo sounds much too healthy for a bar! I suggest they re-name it Gecko!
