Lao wai's favorite?

Review of Jin Ding Xuan
1

Sorry to say, for those who think that jin ding xuan's dimsum is good, have they really tried other good dim sum's place dimsum? or its because this is the only affordable dim sum place and thus getting these ratings?

I have given JDX many many chances by trying it at least 5 times before i write this comment, but despite the award they got every year (highly suspicious) and all the great reviews saying its their best restaurant they ever been (more suspicious as for those reviews which use such strong word like 'best'), any people who like to eat or like food or like cantonese food can tell that the food is moderate, its not very very bad but it is not even close to best cantonese restaurant....

one thing of such low quality stuff is definitely due to too many varieties of food offers in the restaurant, they cannot master any of those which makes it so special but they do focus in lowering the price, 24hours operation and etc to lure customers, which i have no problem, but giving them such as best restaurant or best cantonese food in town, makes me highly suspicious on the beijinger is merely rewarding their customer so that they can advertise more in their magazines.

btw, can check with any well known and reputable food critique in town, no one will recommend you this restaurant, so, how on earth it can be competing with other great cantonese restaurant?!

Re: Lao wai's favorite?

Danny,

As you note, Jin Ding Xuan is about the cheapest place in town for dim sum. This is the main reason for its success. Many people find the prices attractive and the setting accessible - the Ditan location in particular feels quite special/unique to a newcomer.

I agree with you that their dim sum is at best only acceptable and at worst a very ropey Beijing approximation of dim sum, but it's the whole package that people buy into. That's why it keeps getting votes and winning awards.

Also, if you do some digging about when Jin Ding Xuan last placed in the Beijinger, I'm pretty sure it's been a long while (if ever) ...

Danny:

1. Jin Ding Xuan has never advertised with our magazine.

2. Our Reader Restaurant Awards are selected by our readers, not us -- so we do not have control over who wins.

Iain- what package do you mean ?
If I wish to enjoy beautiful buildings I walk over to Lama temple. Apart from that, I really don't know what JDX has to offer other than lanterns.
JDX's food is absolutely not edible.
Even If they paid me for eating there ( ever again ) I would pay them more than their offer just to be a free man and enjoy the few good restaurants in town.

Re: Lao wai's favorite?

JDX is the best value dim sum in "normal" price class. And, as many of us JDX lovers go their piss drunk it really adds to the flavour of their food! It is the ultimate late night dining. Id give it five stars for all the pleasure it has given me when i needed it the most!

Re: Lao wai's favorite?

It's not only a laowai favorite, it's obviously a local favorite. For those bitching, if you have a better suggestion, you not make it?
