Location is not ok~~
Review of Home Plate Bar-B-Que
Have noticed many good comments about this place, finally we decided to have a try. After made 2 calls to make sure of where they are at, we found such a disappointment about their location, they are in line with some not-for-good-dinner Chinese restaurants. We didn't got in the restaruant at all.
I think many people like us pay attention to a restaruant location as well. Here I just give an warning to like-minded food and restaurant searchers.
I do like good food at a reasonable price, but such a location is definitely way out of my acceptable spot.

Usually, a negative review hurts.

If you didn't go in how can you review it? Of all the other restaurants there they are probably the only one that doesn't use gutter oil. How pretentious.

Yeah, this is an absurd review. The restaurant's location is fine... its not in the middle of a fancy block or in a mall or anything - but the restaurants on that street are all perfectly acceptable, normal, "local" Chinese restaurants.
OP is an uptight shrew who should go back to whatever country he or she comes from since they aren't comfortable eating outside the hotel...

Next question? Or do you prefer to stick to places within your "acceptable spot"

I think the OP is Chinese which explains a lot.

I actually dig that the place is in a sort of low key environment. The food rocks, and the people friendly as hell. I admire that they sit side by side with Chinese hawking rou jia mou and the like, They aren't the green tea house, or Southern Beauty, or Nobu. Its blue collar bbq and nice that it flies under the radar of the CBD- Sanlitun , driver-ayi set.

The review does come across as a bit "fu er dai"... need to be "seen" while eating, thus would rather pay for low quality food in a place like the Village or Solana... fine by me, more for the rest of us!
Really a shame that someone would not even eat somewhere and leave such a negative review. Isn't there a moderator for this kind of thing?

Wow..I'm surprised by ppl's reaction to my negative reviw..Someone even ask to remove my comment..very Democracy!
Why I left a comment about this place without even got in the restaurant is that I didn't see any of previous comments that mentioned how bad is their location. I thought that I need to point that out so not to mislead other like-minded foodies. If I had noticed it I wouldn't had tried to go there at all.
I don't mean to hurt the feeling of a "good" restaurant owner but simply state the fact. I can surely eat street food from time to time when I found a nice enviroment. One thing is I hope you noticed, all western food in general got a higher price here, compare with general Chinese food at same level, so for good use of our money, I think it's reasonable to ask for more things(good location to enjoy a good time) about a western restaurant here. Their location is not deemed as any ok for any foodies to hang out at all. In a compund area?strange enough! what I wanna say, maybe it's not fully correct, some foreign-owned restaurant here really can't find an essence of China restaurant business.
They should definitely change the location if they don't wanna go bankrupt soon.

First of all, not all "western food" is the same, and not all of it is created equal... this place has a specialty, it does American-style BBQ. There aren't other places in Beijing that do that - or do it well, at least. Take that into consideration, please.
As far as I know, this is a home-grown sort of joint, not your typical chain-restaurant and/or generic Beijing-style "western food" (what do you mean by that anyways, potatoes and bread? ). These guys deserve at least a respectful review. Giving them one star solely based on location is not really fair. What if I went to your favorite restaurant (or one you just really like) and told you I'm giving it only one star because even though I didn't eat any of the food there, no matter how delicious! it may be, I found it overcrowded and noisy, too 热闹! for my tastes. Is it really fair to give a place 1 star for that if I didn't even try the food???

Man does this guy get lamer as the postings continue. Look buddy you and your euro trash scum who need to eat at Ch'ien Men 23 just need to stfu!
Since when is any place in this city a breeze to get to? I hate sanlitun and its BS restaurants and their attitudes. I dig what Homeplate is doing, which is a grass roots vibe. Really when your company placed you here on your expat package and your silver spoon did they not mention that Beijing is a tough joint, restaurants come and go, or change owners all the time. We need to support establishments that are just starting out hoping to grow and flourish. So please stay at your pinnacle plaza/euro plaza thai restaurant and don't come into the 3rd ring area because Beijing does not welcome you!
Thanks

Re: Location is not ok~~
Thanks for the support.
Occasionally we get people a bit angry due to the hard time finding the place but after a belly-full of real Southern BBQ they go away happy... as long as they come in.
Our place is a bit hard to find, tidied away in a different location with mostly bare walls and small photos dangling. Besides brick, concrete and a movie there ain't much to look at. We refuse to apologize for that. Our lack of flash isn't an accident, nor a statement, it just is.
Southern BBQ was created by the poor for the poor. A glass of water, a glass of whiskey, a plate full of meat.
Sit back, sip an iced tea or bourbon, eat, talk to your friends, listen to good tunes, read a paper, or God forbid spark up a conversation with your neighbor... just do something besides stare at colorful lights. That's the way we want it. Hell, we love it this way. If you are turned off because of the location Home Plate isn't meant for you.
American Southern BBQ is taking the toughest cuts of meat and using smoke, technique and patience to turn a bastard into a prince.
And Lighty? bless your heart.

Not sure who is more deserving of the home plate Darwin award. This quilt, or the rocket who complained the brisket wasn't made to order.
