"Pizza party for 10"? Not quite.

Review of The Kro's Nest
2

On Monday night I went to Kro's Nest after winning the Beijinger pizza wars. I was told that I had won a free pizza party for 10 people. All we got for the "pizza party for 10" was an extra-large pizza, which meant one (albeit large) slice per person. This was not enough to fill up 10 people, and it felt like a scam to get us to spend money, since we were all already there. The waitress even tried to upsell salads and appetizers, which is usually welcome, but not when you are expecting to eat for free. I felt embarrassed for inviting my co-workers, since half of them had never been there before, and everyone was expecting a free meal that would fill them up. Free draft beer was also included, but the whole restaurant was allowed free beer, so it wasn't a special privilege. In fact, because of this, they kept running out of beer, and the waitress only served us once. From that point on we had to go up to the bar to refill our cups. Also, there was only one waitress for the 30 people (3 people won a pizza party for 10). It took 20 minutes for my drink to arrive, and then another 30 minutes for the (not free) refill, after asking three times for another glass. Even though I personally won the pizza party, I paid 45rmb for three glasses of tea. If I had stayed home, I would have spent less money eating somewhere else.
The poor management and the fact that I was supposed to have won a "pizza party" that felt more like a money-making scheme turned the expected pleasant evening into an expensive hassle. Although Kro's Nest was my favorite pizza place in town, after my "prize", I don't plan on returning.

The lesson here is to ALWAYS cross-check, confirm with the entity the details governing an offer. If its too good to be true, it normally ALWAYS is. Especially in China.

Re: "Pizza party for 10"? Not quite.

Fair enough. I suppose I trusted the Beijinger/Kro's Nest, especially since the pizza wars seemed to be a big deal.

Re: "Pizza party for 10"? Not quite.

why did you give that place 2 stars for god's sake???
they ripped you off and thats how you treat them? i would have given the manager some hard time.

also to thebeijinger team: wtf?? winning a pizza party for 10 and getting treated like that? there must be seriously something wrong with the awards handed out. i am very certain the awards are reflecting the money that is spent on commercials on the homepage...more money = more awards?
a place that gets only bad rewards suddenly wins the pizza-award??? sure.

Re: "Pizza party for 10"? Not quite.

Well, the pizza was really tasty, the waitress wasn't rude, and I've had a decent experience two times prior, so I felt 2 stars was fair overall.

Hi there --

I'm very disappointed to hear of your experience at Kro's on what we imagined would be a great celebration for you and 9 friends. To make it up to you, we will offer you the cash equivalent of what we at the Beijinger consider a reasonable pizza party for 10 -- 5 medium pizzas (2 cheese, 2 pepperoni and 1 combo pizza) plus 20 beers. You will then be free to decide whether you'd like to give Kro's a second chance or spend the money at another of Beijing's pizza joints.

Again, my apologies

I hate it when users figure out that we only give the awards to advertisers on our home page. With that in mind, I'd like to remind all of you on this year's winners in the Beijinger Pizza Cup:

1. BFSU Soulbridge International School of Business
2. Beijing Top Rated Car Rental Service Co.Ltd
3. DHL
4. Bling
5. SpeakChinese Mandarin Language School

Congrats to all these top pizza joints!

Re: "Pizza party for 10"? Not quite.

Thank you admin. That is a very generous offer. I've always seen the Beijinger as a quality website, and the quick response and offer of compensation only furthers that sentiment.

Re: "Pizza party for 10"? Not quite.

That's very shitty behaviour from Kro's Nest, but good effort from Beijinger to repair their fumble. Do let us know if Kro's nest give you any kind of apology.

Re: "Pizza party for 10"? Not quite.

Very polite review given the situation and good on The Beijinger for making it right. Withholding judgment on Kro's....

Re: "Pizza party for 10"? Not quite.

No word from Kro's Nest yet. I'll post a reply if I hear anything within a month.

Re: "Pizza party for 10"? Not quite.

Update: It's been one month, and no word from Kro's. I suppose you can interpret that however you wish.

Re: "Pizza party for 10"? Not quite.

It's strange...some people can get used to different cultures, others can't. Either way, if i were offered free pizza and free beer, i wouldn't be complaining. You said you took your co-workers to Krow's and felt embarrassed afterwoods...if you wanted to impress them, why not take them somewhere you know is good??? sounds like you took the cheap way out, there...and i guess they understandbly feel the same. Personally, I've heard of Krow's but never been there. I would never put a place down after a severe lack of judgement on my part, though....the words "ungrateful" and "Presumptuous" come to mind here, sorry.

Re: "Pizza party for 10"? Not quite.

It was the false advertisement of being a pizza party for "10 people" specifically that bothered me. Based off of the other comments listed above, it seems that most people would agree with me as well. If I had known that we would only be given one large pizza, I would have only invited 4 or 5 friends.

Yeah! A person wins a prize and decides to share it with their co-workers. The nerve!

This restaurant said they'd supply the prize for a contest, got eyeballs for being a prize sponsor and then didn't fulfill their obligation. Clearly, the contest winner is at fault.
