Asked to leave (and really perplexed as to why)

Dropped by today for the 2nd time in 3 days, having enjoyed myself on my first visit. Ordered a soda water (which costs the exact same as a beer and, given the early evening hour, seemed appropriate). Sat down with my buddy to play some Mario Tennis and Dale, the co-owner, told us to leave (we were in the venue less than 6 minutes).

“You’ll have to make way for people coming through, you can’t just hang out here. This is a business.”

I informed him I’d bought a drink and even gestured to it. He shrugged his shoulders and repeated “this is a business.”

He wasn’t hostile about it, but I don’t recall encountering such a confusing and alienating experience in a business. Obviously boycotting it, if only because I don’t want to be shoved off a stool because someone he likes more than me walks in and needs somewhere to hang their coat.

Despite that, I did really like my first visit, so I guess the place is a crapshoot.

First of all let me apologize for this misunderstanding. We would never ask you to leave the bar, just to give the paying customers the usage of the games.

We overheard your friend saying ‘I don’t want to drink anything, I just want to play Mario tennis’. He didn’t purchase a drink. We were addressing your friend in this case.

The bar is so small that we have to give preference to the paying customers. I hope you can understand that at times when the bar begins to fill that it can be disheartening to try and uphold this rule as we would hope it would be a given.

We are happy to hear you had fun at the bar and please do so again. We would like to invite you for a drink on us to make up for this misunderstanding.

Dale

Greetings Dale,

figured this must have been a miscommunication of some kind. Consider the matter resigned to history. No need for free drinks- both parties were in the wrong to an extent, though the gesture is nonetheless appreciated.
