Google, Google, Gone

Google is steadily losing its grasp on China. Last year it was the search engine and this summer Google Maps may be moving out as well.

Reported Friday by People’s Daily, “Google has not applied for its Internet mapping license and all Internet mapping services that have not applied for the license will be shut down on July 1, said an official from the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping (SBSM).”

During the weekend, People's Daily reported that Google is in talks with the Chinese government, though there no new developments or responses from Google.

Those without alternative connections to the outside world will have to information from the likes of Baidu and Sina.

Exactly what this means for other sites that use Google's mapping service is unknown.

Some belated news - looks like they applied after all, but whether the govt decides to play along remains to be seen.

interestingly enough, google is hiring in China. Check the Careers section and look for China. You'll find that they are restaffing for Beijing and Shanghai。

Who knows, might have something to do with Android, or google might restructure their Chinese business. It's too soon to rule out Google in China. As with Regards Sina and Baidu search, in reality we all know it's just a Chinafied google search running stolen google 1.0 code

This is not surprising news. Google refuses to collaborate with the government and so is being pushed out, disrupted, and inconvenienced in any and every way possible. It is certainly not because Baidu or Sina are better.

By the way, there is a typo here, Lauren:

You might want to say "those without alternative connections to the outside world will have to get information from the likes of Baidu and Sina."
