Where the Wind Blows: Beijing to Build 'Ventilation Corridors' to Blow Away Pollution

Beijing plans to build "ventilation corridors" to allow regular air flow across the city reduce pollution, state-run media reported.

Five primary corridors 500 meters wide will run from north to south, with secondary corridors 80 meters wide will also be cleared. The corridors will link various green areas of the city, including parks, rivers, and lakes.

"Ventilation corridors can improve wind flow through a city so that wind can blow away heat and pollutants, relieving urban heat island effect and air pollution," China Daily quoted Wang Fei, identified as deputy head of Beijing's urban planning committee, as saying.

Other cities including Shanghai and Fuzhou have also built such corridors, but the reports did not indicate if they had been successful in reducing urban air pollution.

Beijing's average PM 2.5 readings decreased by 6.2 percent in 2015, with an average reading of 80.6.
