Beijing Opera Remixed: Opera and EDM Stars Come Together for a Fresh Take on an Old Form, Jan 13

My first time experiencing Beijing opera was when I first spent an extended amount of time here living with a host family. Trying to understand what my host family was saying (with a few years of high school Chinese under my belt) was hard enough, so you can imagine how well I handled navigating the high-pitched squawk of specialized opera language and singing.

Fast forward 10 years, and I've managed to steer well away from Beijing opera ever since. If you've had a similar experience with this nuanced and challenging ancient Chinese artform, the Beijing Opera Remix organized by China Music House, may present the perfect way to give it a second try.

The 'remix' refers to the fact that DJs will perform side by side with Chinese opera stars from around the country. The evening's performances will be genre-crossing, under the direction of famous Chinese music producer Chen Weilun.

Those providing the modern aspects of the show include EDM producer Wang Lu, DJ Crane Leopard Piqi, whereas the traditional elements shall be fronted by opera stars such as Peng Qinghua, Li Jiayi, and Gong Yinlei.

This fresh spin on opera takes place on January 13, starting at 7.30pm, at the Tianqiao Theater. Tickets start at RMB 180, which can be purchased here.
