Events That Won't Leave You Hungover, Oct 15-20

We take a break after a fun-filled, and perhaps slightly askew, weekend, putting down our drinks to take a more productive look at the days ahead in Beijing. Here is our top pick of this week's Events That Won't Leave You Hungover...

Tuesday, Oct 15

Mental Health Day: Lived Experiences With CandleX
To mark World Mental Health Day, which passed on Oct 10, Beijing-based mental health non-profit organization CandleX organizes a panel discussion between founder Xiaojie, two regular attendees of the CandleX support group, and doctor Hu Bojun from United Family to discuss their first-hand experiences dealing with mental health in Beijing and what people can do should they need mental health support. The event hopes to provide individuals who may otherwise feel isolated a way to build a support network and meet people who have or continue to navigate mental health obstacles. RMB 150, RMB 130 (advance). 7pm. Crossboundaries

Carly Rae Jepsen
Candian pop icon Carly Rae Jepsen (also pictured at top) returns to Beijing on Wednesday for what will likely be one massive singalong of her greatest hits: "Call Me Maybe," anyone? Having largely remained true to her pop roots, Jepsen has continued to draw in fans with a steady maturation of her themes and content, though still dedicating her attention to the messy musings of love and longing. Read about what more to expect hereRMB 480, 780, 1,080. 8pm. Century Theater

Thursday, Oct 17

Bohemian Betyars
Another act that is returning to Beijing this week is the Hungarian gypsy punk set Bohemian Betyars. Since playing at School Bar in 2017, they continued on their travels around the world and now graduate to the sizably larger Omni Space stage to get the crowd dancing with their incredibly infectious blend of punk, gypsy jazz, and carnival-like performance. RMB 240, RMB 180 (advance). 8.30pm. Omni Space

Friday, Oct 18

China Through Cinema: Tuya's Marriage
For a low-key Friday alternative, head to Culture Yard where they'll be showing 2006's Tuya's Marriage (图雅的婚事). The film follows peasant Tuya (pictured right above), a happily married mother of two who is also the full-time carer for her disabled husband. That all changes though when Tuya suddenly collapses in the fields: the couple must consider separating so that Tuya can find a new husband to look after them both. The film will be followed by a discussion from host Jenny Wu. RMB 50, RMB 25 (Culture Yard students). 7.45pm. Culture Yard

Saturday and Sunday, Oct 19-20

Beijing Pizza Fest
This weekend marks the return of the biggest pizza event in China, bringing together Beijing's best vendors to serve you, the hungry public, and more delicious pizza than you could reasonably eat in a month. Following a cold and wet weekend past, things are looking altogether more inviting on Saturday and Sunday with temperatures getting back into the 20s degrees Celsius. It's the perfect opportunity for you to slap on your toga and get to work winning one of the multiple competitions or simply enjoying the excellent entertainment that will be on offer throughout the weekend. RMB 20, RMB 50 (ticket plus T-shirt), RMB 60 (ticket plus toga). Saturday and Sunday, 11am-8pm. Galaxy Soho

There are plenty more fun, exciting (and even boozy) events in our Events section here.
