Come, Darcy, I must have you dance!

Join us on Saturday 25th October for the 22nd Annual British Charity Ball – our Pride and Prejudice themed extravaganza!

Beijing's biggest, oldest and – we think – BEST charity ball is back for its 22nd year! Join us for a night of delicious food, delightful drinks, and dancing until dawn as we take you back to Regency-era England for a Pride and Prejudice themed entertainment extravaganza.

In 2025, we celebrate the 250th birthday of English novelist Jane Austen, widely regarded as one of the UK's greatest writers. Her sharp social satire, masterful wit, and the enduring relevance of her novels have made her cherished across the world – including in China, where more than 50 translations of her works have been published since 1935.

Perhaps her most famous novel, Pride and Prejudice, needs no introduction. This timeless tale of romance, happiness, and class in aristocratic England has captivated generations of readers and inspired countless adaptations for stage and screen.
At our Beijing retelling of the Netherfield Ball, you can expect an evening of dancing, fine wines, delicious dining, and entertainment lasting late into the night. Guests will enjoy lively activities, a dazzling charity raffle and silent auction, and plenty of surprises along the way.

Everyone can use more poetry in their lives. There’s “nothing that poetry can’t expand and unpack and emphasise or nuance in some interesting, challenging ways,” says the poet Tony Hoagland. With that in mind, on Saturday, September 13, three Beijing-based poets with books published while living in Beijing will present their works, covering a wide range of themes and styles. All books will be discounted for attendees.

The reading will mark the Beijing book launch of David Harrison Horton’s newest full-length collection, Necessary, a poetic exploration of time, place, and connection. Drawing on sources as diverse as Babylonian creation myths, Carolingian history, Marco Polo, Paul Éluard, Elizabeth Willis, and Xinran, Horton layers fragments and imagery into a contemporary meditation on how we come to understand our place within inherited and unfolding narratives. Joining him are Anthony Tao, who previously gave a reading at The Hutong in April, and Feniá G.

Feniá’s first poetry collection, SPOUT: A Poetry Memoir (2023), delves into themes of identity and experiential reflection. The collection compiles impacting moments of life, revolving around childhood, lust, and reflection in moments of confusion and stagnation.

Tao’s first poetry collection, We Met in Beijing (2024), explores life in Beijing for locals and outsiders, chronicling more than a decade of change in China’s political and cultural nerve centre. It details the exhilaration, hardship, and heartbreak of trying to put down roots in this gritty, unrelenting metropolis.

Books are available for Purchase

Each book will be sold for 75 RMB - or you can get a set, one from each author, for 150 RMB.
