Bernd Ammann works as a film- and media-composer in Vienna and released Descending as his first solo work. Integrating bass, oud, trumpet, beatboxing, jazz, techno and many things more without losing focus or direction – or sounding too dense – this album is an impressive piece – in a silent way.

Even if you are unsure what Funk is as a genre of music, you would have heard of super hits like “Superstition”, “Get Down On It”, “Sex Machine”, "Funky Town" etc. Songs with distinctive groovy beats that will guarantee to get your body moving.

Every Friday, let's get down on it with DJ Yauma from Barcelona, and he will wake you up with his funky tunes and energize your inner groove. Catch him at DE REFTER, every Friday from 10pm to dance and get your grooves on!

What is Funk?

Funk originated in African-American communities in the mid-1960s when African-American musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of soul music, jazz, and rhythm and blues (R&B). Funk focuses on a strong rhythmic groove of a bass line played by an electric bassist and a drum part played by a drummer.

God Father of Funk

A progenitor of funk music and a major figure of 20th-century music and dance, James Brown is often referred to as the "Godfather of Soul". His success peaked with hits “Out of Sight’ and ‘Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag’, also known as the golden age of Funk.

The word funk literally refers to a strong odor, a "musty" smell. It was used to explain a sense of "earthy" in early jazz slang for something "deeply or strongly felt". Musicians would say “get down on it”, meaning “let’s get funky”!
