To celebrate their return from a tour of China, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam, Beijing art-rock duo Guiguisuisuitake to the stage at DDC to play tracks off their new EP ‘Charon’. To mark the occasion they’ve asp invited post-rock masterminds She Never Sings Our Songs and producer extraordinaire thruoutin to join for an evening of tripped outsounds and morphing visuals.

GGSS (Electronic, Blues, Horror punk, 8-bit, Noise)
Guiguisuisui is a two-piece art-rock performance band. Curated by Chinese artist Nan Guazi and British husband Dann Gaymer, Guiguisuisui blends electronic and live sounds to explore a p spectrum of genres as the backing to interactive theatre featuring a cast of idosyn craftic craters from an imagined future. Meanwhile, Nan Guazi’s visuals wash over the stage, animated steampunk fairy tales that add to the ethereal quality of the performance. The show has toured relentlessly since it’s beginnings in 2012, with gigs in China, Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe (UK, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Poland). In 2016 they were presented with the ‘Band of the Year’ award at City Weekend Beijing’s annual awards show as well as being featured on the cover of 通俗歌曲('tong su ge qu') magazine, China’s longest running rock and roll magazine. The Shining Soundscape concept is the latest manifestation of the bands’ experiences to date.

Support:
SNSOS (post-rock/instrumental)
Beijing outfit She Never Sings Our Songs (SNSOS) unveiled their debut self-titled LP at the end of the year and it’s a warm slice of post-rock pie that’ll have genre fans clamoring for more. It’s a great display for the band’s sound – nurturing instrumental rock and roll with shades of math rock playfulness, dream pop pulp, and post-rock crescendos that’s spirited, intricately assembled, and brimming with life. Guitars converse with one another, cymbals shimmer with exuberance, and dialogue is formed between each of the members, volleying back and forth until blurring into a mesmerizing blanket of sound.

thruoutin (Experimental)
American born electronic producer and multi-instrumentalist, thruoutin, has been based in China since 2009. His work varies from project to project but often revolves around the combining of different genres with a focus on organic and digital sounds. He has extensively toured through North America and Asia; releasing music on several labels along the way. Most Recently he has put out work with Beijing labels RAN Music and Jingweir as well as performing on Boiler Room China and playing at festivals such as Wetware and Jiangbei.

"Searchlights of Voice" is a new label founded by members of existing labels D.O.G. and Drunkard. They hope to book shows and sign/work with bands that are a bit more under the radar than their normal activities with other projects. To kick off their founding, they have arranged a big 2 day opening party at School featuring friends and bands they plan to work with in the future.

Day 1 features an indie rock theme and showcases the ever-popular Mr. Graceless, rock n' roll stars from Taiyuan Three Kings, indie-pop poets out of Zhengzhou Limi, ambient pop artist Jeaqi, and rounding out the evening, Ming Xu. Day 2 hands the wheels over to post-emo outfit Wonder Sea, alternative band with a range of influences Silent Speech, the ever hard to categorize (why should we categorize?) post-rock band Acid Accident, metal/punk/improv/etc. project Swarrm, and the post-rock/hardcore musings of Wan Hua Tong.

All killer and no filler in this two day blowout.

TROPICAL CHINA, Subtropical Asia in Partnership with The Brazilian Embassy in Beijing and Dafu Records, launch the firsts sino-brazilian album of the history. The annual project will bring Brazilian musicians to record in China with Chinese youth talents, the albums will be produced and distributed by indie labels in both countries. The First edition happens in March featuring 33EMYBW & GOOOOOSE from the Chinese side and AVA ROCHA & NEGRO LEO from the Brazilian side. The conclusion of the works will be showcase in March 30th at Modernsky Lab in Shanghai, but before that we will host a special warmup showcase in Beijing at fRUITYSPACE on March 15th, where Ava Rocha and Negro Leo will join two of Beijing’s finest – guitar noise renegade Li Jianhong and grassland musician Bayan Dalai.

AVA ROCHA

Ava Rocha is a Brazilian singer, songwriter and filmmaker. Daughter of two powerhouse filmmakers in Brazil, cinema has been in the Rio-born singer’s blood since she was a child. A leading figure in Brazil’s post-Tropicalia movement, along with her husband, Negro Leo, whom she often creates music with, she’s been turning the meaning of Brazilian pop on its head. Expanding on the foundation of the movement – an aim at universalizing and modernizing the language of Brazilian pop music, incorporating elements from world youth music such as Afro and Amazonian grooves as well as rock, psychedelia and electric guitar - Ava Rocha goes above and beyond. Embedding elements of Asian, Middle Eastern, and Latin American music with high doses of experimentalism, all colliding and fusing together with rock n' roll, funk, soul and Bossa-Nova vibes, the result is something challenging, something to embrace and something wholly original. A true creator in avant-garde art that never excludes the listener but instead introduces them to a completely new ocean of possibilities.

NEGRO LEO

"Negro Leo is part of a new experimental-music scene in Rio de Janeiro, associated over the last five years with the label Quintavant and the club Audio Rebel. Animated, charismatic, kind of wizardly with his rhythmic shouting of dream-state symbolic lyrics and his rough musicianship, Negro Leo dares you to demystify his method. They contain funk and free jazz and noise; they’ve got something to do with the 1960s Tropicalismo movement in Brazil, something to do with Arto Lindsay and New York’s brief late-’70s No Wave movement." LI JIANGHONG 李剑鸿

Guitar demi-god Li Jianhong, whose drone-heavy, shredful, gut-wailing brand of guitar improv is always a wonder to behold, who’ll turn his guitar into a perpetual motion machine of sound, swaying his entire body to the layers of noise, making you scream out in delight as he gives a curling vengeful noise sacrifice to the guitar deities above.

BAYAN DALAI 巴彦达莱

Bayan Dalai is the frontman for Horse Radio and formerly for December3am, two bands who made quite a splash when they were active with their reliably high-energy performances. With a knack for adding in elements of krautrock, psychedelic music, and experimental tones into his Inner Mongolian gruff and desire to explore the outer edges of his ancestors music.
