Bands: Rough Image 粗糙影像, Baihu白虎 , Deadly Cradle Death 致命摇篮死, Sleeping Dogs

Subtropical Asia is a newly established independent label that looks to present new sounds and scenes to the people. In the spring, we invited Shanghai group Absolute Purity, fronted by Wen Lun of the seminal punk outfit Guai Li, to debut their sound in Beijing. Later on, we turned Yue Space into a battleground - pitting one band against another - including Dirty Fingers, Underdog, Mirrors, and Lonely Leary - ushering in a new age for what a live concert could be.

This time, we’re bringing four bands that that’s aren’t known to most. The common thread that ties them together: their bold psychedelic, experimental, improvisational and sprawling soundscapes that simply can’t be matched. At the end of the summer, on Friday, August 31st, three bold new sounds from some of Beijing’s most prolific musicians welcome the mysterious and captivating krautrock trio Round Image from Changchun, Jilin. This is - A Dazed Nation.

The mystery of Rough Image, the Krautrock psychedelic rock band from Changchun, is very much like most people's impression of their hometown in the northeast - an empty slate, a cypher that can’t be cracked. Their pure unadulterated sets full of Krautrock, psychedelic, noise, and improvisational mayhem - full of assured, slow burning encircling guitar-led arrangements that stimulate the ears as well as the mind - are a wonder to behold. Soothing when restrained, dynamic and kinetic when the mood strikes, they never play the same set twice, instead relying on their surroundings to harness their energy. They’re a sonic treat you don’t want to miss.

The three supporting acts are made up of an array of members from prominent bands of the underground music scene in China, and anyone who has followed Maybe Mars over the years will recognize some of these familiar faces. While Deadly Cradle Death was founded in 2011 by He Fan (the lead singer of the Birdstriking) and Liu Xinyu (formerly of Chui Wan), the newly established psychedelic supergroup Baihu, features a score of Maybe Mars characters including Sun Heting (of Gate to Otherside), and the stylishly lo-fi are still evolving Sleeping Dogs consists of Liu Xinyu, Li Zichao and A Bing (of Boiled Hippo).

Deadly Cradle Death - the cult favourite anti-club duo, that veers off into the deep end and revels in psychedelic undertones of hip-hop, drum n bass, and experimental music, haven’t performed in quite sometime. But promoters Spilt Works shook them out of their stupor this past June to open for Detroit post punk band Protomartyr. Rejuvenated and maybe even a bit shell-shocked they’re looking forward to breaking the silence once and for all this August.

Not long ago, the newly formed Baihu (aka White Tiger) caused quite a commotion in Beijing and Shanghai, attracting attention not only for their solid cast of characters, but for their intoxicating arrangements and alluring blend of sprawling psychedelic soundscapes and wistful daydreaming. The band which features Ricky Maymi, prominent member of the esteemed American psychedelic band The Brian Jonestown Massacre, on drums, is truly on its own wavelength.

Sleeping Dogs made their debut last year at fRUITYSPACE’s epic New Year's Eve bash to much praise. That didn’t stop the trio for completely revamping their sound and tossing out all their old recordings, which are said to have contained elements of jazz, math rock, and electronica. We have no idea if any of that will remain in the band’s current form but we’re eager to find out.

Rough Image (Psychedelic, Noise, Experimental)

Changchun revels in the cavernous underbelly of instrumental rock via Rough Image. The Jilin province trio who are influenced by Krautrock, psychedelic, noise, and experimental rock bring a steady hand to their freewheeling sets – full of assured, slow burning encircling guitar-led jams that stimulate the ears as well as the noogin. Soothing when it’s needs to be, dynamic and kinetic when the mood strikes, and full of enough psychedelic allure and introspective radiance to keep the feeblest of minds entranced, they're a sonic treat you don’t want to miss.

Baihu (Indie, Rock)

The forthcoming psychedelic supergroup made up of some of Maybe Mars’ most mischievous characters including Brain Jonestown Massacre’s Ricky Maymi on drums, Birdstriking/Gate to Otherside’s Sun Heting on vocals, and more familiar faces. A long and winding mixture of psychedelic soundscaping and wistful daydreaming, that offers plenty of surprises.

Deadly Cradle Death (Electronic)

Deadly Cradle Death is an experimental duo that consists of He Fan (Carsick Cars’ bass player and guitarist of Birdstriking) and multi-instrumentalist Liu Xinyu. They chose the name for the band based on the North American TV series “1000 Ways To Die”, according to which the “Deadly Cradle Death” is one out of 1000 ways to die. They describe the atmosphere their music creates as one, in which “theatricality and danger surge up within the electronic sounds until they die a deadly cradle death”. It’s pitch black anti-club music that veers off into the deep end and revels in psychedelic undertones of hip-hop, drum n bass, and experimental music.

Sleeping Dogs (Indie, Rock)

The new project from Zooming Night’ regulars and the psychedelic scene’s most prolific characters including Liu Xinyu and Li Zichao as well as and Abing (Boiled Hippo) creating a jazzy infectious mixture of mathy instrumental tunes with programmed beats.
