The Pavel Haas Quartet

The Pavel Haas Quartet has been called "the world's most exciting string quartet" (Gramophone). Since winning the Paolo Borciani competition in Italy in spring 2005, they have established themselves as one of the world's foremost chamber ensembles, performing at the world's most prestigious concert halls and recording six award-winning CDs. Based in Prague, the quartet studied with Milan Skampa, the legendary violist of the Smetana Quartet, and still enjoy a close relationship with him.

Alt-J will headline this year's Strawberry. Modern Sky's three-day outdoor music festival finally returns to Beijing. Tickets are on sale now and are priced at RMB 320 for a single-day pass and RMB 580 for a VIP single-day pass.

Leading the international charge are English indie rock band Alt-J (pictured, Mecury Prize winner, Grammy Awards Nominator), along with Brooklyn-based psych-rockers Habibi, fellow Brooklynites Liars, Japanese outfit illion, The Fin and more. The charming, witty, whimsical work of songwriter Devendra Banhart is often classified as “freak folk”, but that’s far too dark a descriptor for music that brims with infectious energy, hearty laughs, and bossa nova-laced grooves.

Over 9 studio albums, he’s come to define the burgeoning genre of alternative folk music: tunes that sound fresh, yet as old as the hills. He’s created a whacky, inscrutable world, with a sound that somehow blends “Axl Rose, Kurt Cobain, Mick Jagger, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Ali Farka Toure.”

It’s weird, but weirdly irresistible. “Anyone who can sit down and write this many unique songs,” said one breathless review of his last album, “has to have something abnormally genius working inside.”

We’re delighted to welcome the abnormal genius of Devendra Banhart to China. Beijing on Saturday, 9 June at Yugong Yishan. In the man’s own words, “you’ll never have seen such good things.” This will be a special set, with Devendra performing as a duo.

Tonight is a special night for hardcore music fans as School Bar holds Volume 7 of its "Friends Family Forever" series, which celebrates all things hardcore music in Beijing. Tonight shall feature the release of the translated version of Steven Blush's documentary "American Hardcore." Also in the house will be MeiEr from Anti-Dogs and Lao Li of Unregenerate Blood to talk about the hardcore community.

Tonight School Bar celebrates 8 years of music, drinking, absurdity, and late nights. This evening should be no different, as we have gathered a couple of our current favorite bands from outside of Beijing, as well as a couple good friends from right here in Beijing.

Making the trek into Beijing for the occasion are rock n' rollers Three Kings from Taiyuan and Peace and Wave from Shanghai. Joining them are Xinjiang folk ensemble A Li Pu and School Bar house band Candy Monster.
