Drummer Jason Marsalis, of the famous Marsalis jazz family, appears at Blue Note Beijing on September 27th and 28th with his 21st Century Trad Band. The artist’s many recordings and accomplishments are too numerous to list, but he promises his audiences that he’s always learning and growing musically.

Blue Note Beijing celebrates its 2nd anniversary in September with the next installment of its Master’s Series, this time featuring trumpeter and flugelhornist Ingrid Jensen. Jensen, originally from Nanaimo, British Columbia in western Canada, has been a leading soloist and international educator for three decades. Renowned for her burnished tone, melodic ingenuity, and her stylistic versatility, Jensen has released nine albums as a leader or co-leader. Her first album, Vernal Fields (1996), earned her a JUNO Award (the Canadian music industry’s equivalent to the American GRAMMY Award). Her latest album, Infinitude (2016), is a co-led release with her sister, Christine Jensen, an acclaimed saxophonist and composer. In addition to her work as a leader, Jensen has long been in-demand as a supporting member of larger ensembles, including two of the most innovative and influential large ensembles in modern jazz, the Maria Scheider Orchestra and Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society. Her influence is also evident in the students that she has worked with over the years, having taught at the University of Michigan and Peabody Conservatory and having served on faculty at the Banff Centre’s Workshop in Jazz & Creative Music, Stanford Jazz Camp, and the Dave Brubeck Institute, among others. With Jensen as featured soloist, the Blue Note Beijing Jazz Orchestra will present compositions of hers arranged for large ensemble specially for this occasion, as well as compositions by her sister Christine and past masters of the trumpet, including Kenny Wheeler, Thad Jones, and more. Finally, this marks the first time the BNBJO has featured a female soloist, and we look forward to welcoming Jensen as our special guest for the Blue Note Beijing 2nd Anniversary.

Estonia’s I Wear* Experiment and Hungary’s Vera Jonas Experiment appears at Laifu Livehouse. I Wear* Experiment blends rock and fashion, while the alternative/indie group Vera Jonas Experiment describes themselves as “experimental pop music for dog lovers.” The five man band is touring in support of their latest album, Tiger, Now!

Born in Colombia, Jay Rodriguez began his musical studies at the age of seven on clarinet and was playing lead alto with the late great Tito Puente by the age of 15. He graduated with the highest honors from New York City's renowned High School for the Performing Arts and continued his studies at the Manhattan School of Music and The New School.

When asked about his childhood, Rodriguez recollects: "My saxophone guru Mark Friedman tried to teach me how important it was to be a kid. Of course, I didn't listen, so I was playing gigs constantly. I'd be coming home at 6 o'clock in the morning, then going to school. That was my childhood and I don't regret it."

This focus and determination have propelled Rodriguez into a successful musical career. A two-time Grammy nominee, he has performed or recorded with a diverse list of talent, including Elvis Costello, Gil Evans, Craig Harris, Eddie Palmieri, Bobby Sanabria, Chucho Valdes, and more.

Sachal Vasandani is recognized for his singular voice, with a tone and unique phrasing that mark him as one of today’s most compelling voices Thoroughly rooted in jazz, Sachal has the swagger to front swinging big bands and the vulnerability to present definitive takes of classic ballads. His deeply creative approach to improvisation across changes and time signatures is truly unique, and he has come to be regarded as one of the eminent improvisers of his generation.



Sachal will be releasing a new, highly personal album in 2018 via the GSI label. The album showcases some of today’s top players and presents classic standards with an unmistakably modern vibe.

DJ Ma Gin Tonic is the singer and producer from Beijing’sfamous electronic band Pacalolo. She is running a vinyl distribution label known as Fizik. Her music combines rock, jazz, folk, retro dance, and electronic genres. In 2017 she started her DJ career as Ma Gin Tonic. Her DJ show is just like the Pacalolo live show with a lot energy and crazy dancing going on!

2014年7月20日刘培义发行个人演奏专辑“十五年”并在波士顿著名音乐厅Roxbury Community College Media Arts Center举办专辑发布音乐会；同年八月回国并在北京，上海，杭州和新疆等地举办一系列演出，推广新专辑中的作品。

2015年3月刘培义在中国国际电台接受中国著名DJ有待的专访；同年11月在浙江音乐学院创办了“萨克斯即兴艺术“大师班并成功和“刘培义爵士四重奏”在刚落成的浙江音乐学院现代音乐厅举办音乐厅建成后的首场音乐会。

除了具备非凡的萨克斯演奏技艺，刘培义还热衷于萨克斯音乐的传播和教育。扎实的美国学院派教育背景让他在演奏和教学界同时拥有良好口碑。他在国内很多音乐学院举办萨克斯讲座包括浙江音乐学院、新疆艺术学院等音乐学院，他的学生中已有相当数量考入伯克利音乐学院和国内名牌艺术院校
