Mala Youhuo (Spice Spirit)

You’ll be reminded of the ubiquity of chili in Sichuan cuisine by the peppery aroma that tickles the nostrils as you enter this stylish restaurant. Spice Spirit attracts a young, affluent crowd that clearly doesn’t mind the wait for a table – reserving ahead is advised, even on weeknights. This being a Sichuan restaurant, the mouth numbing shuizhu yu (fish cooked in an oily, peppercorn-laden soup) is the must-order dish.

Beijing Ornamental Animal Hospital

Originally based in Shanghai and now in Beijing. Services offered include vaccination, consultations, blood tests, neutering and surgery plus a 24/7 emergency service and on-site hospitalization.

Xiangyang Xiaozhu

Classic Chinese dishes rendered guilt-free for vegetarians. We like to get hands-on with the veggie jingzhang rousi, and the special house rice (topped with vegetarian shredded beef, minced pork, pickles and more) is a meal on its own. The cheap prices mean that no matter how much we've stuffed our faces, there's also cash left over to pick up some vegetarian groceries from the small in-house stock.
