MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: In celebration of the Year of the Snake, this in-person talk by Matthew Hu will present the significance of the snake as a motif in Chinese culture, highlighting the snake’s place among the twelve birth signs of the traditional calendar. Showcasing an assortment of snake-themed cultural items from historical sources, the talk will consider how the snake fits in the contemporary Chinese imagination, casting light on how the reptile signals the kind of year we might anticipate in 2025.



MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Matthew Hu was born and raised in Beijing. His work in the past 17 years is largely related to the preservation of built heritage as well as intangible heritage in China. He is currently serving as China Representative of The Prince’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts, trustee of Beijing Cultural Heritage Protection Center (CHP), and Co-Founder of The Courtyard Institute.
