WHAT: Michael Pettis, Beijing-based Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment and former Peking University professor, will be in conversation with the FT’s Beijing bureau chief Joe Leahy, on economic growth in China and future avenues.


ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Michael Pettis is a Beijing-based Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment. Before moving to China in 2002 he spent fifteen years on Wall Street running fixed-income trading and capital markets desks at JP Morgan, First Boston and Bear Stearns. During this time, Michael also taught finance at Columbia University for nine years and at Peking University for 22 years. He has published over 200 articles in various leading periodicals along with six books, the most recent of which, “Trade War is Class War” (Yale University Press 2020), was awarded the Lionel Gelber Prize, a literary award for the world's best non-fiction book. He received an MBA in Finance and an MIA in Development Economics from Columbia University.


ABOUT THE MODERATOR: Joe Leahy is Beijing Bureau Chief for the Financial Times, a role he has held since 2023. He previously served as Asia News Editor from 2019 to 2022, overseeing regional coverage during a period of significant geopolitical and economic change. Joe brings more than three decades of international reporting experience, including postings across Asia and Latin America. He was the FT’s Brazil Bureau Chief from 2011 to 2018 and Mumbai Bureau Chief from 2006 to 2010, following earlier roles as Asia Companies Editor and Hong Kong Correspondent. Before joining the FT, he was Jakarta Bureau Chief for AFX-Asia and Indonesia Correspondent for the South China Morning Post. Joe began his career in Australia as a reporter at Telegraph Newspapers in Melbourne and later worked as a sub-editor in Hong Kong.
