WHAT: "Liangzhu: China’s Forgotten Civilization of Jade and Water," an in-person RASBJ talk by Oliver Radtke on a five-thousand-year-old culture long lost under layers of river silt

MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: Hidden beneath the mists of the lower Yangtze lies one of the world’s earliest urban cultures — the Liangzhu civilization (c. 3300–2300 BCE). This talk introduces the discoveries summarized in Professor Liu Bin’s groundbreaking book "Liangzhu Culture", exploring the enigmatic jade congs, the ritual landscapes, and the social imagination of a prehistoric Chinese world. It invites the audience to reflect on why a five-thousand-year-old culture, long lost under layers of river silt, has become central to China’s modern narrative of civilisation.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Oliver Radtke is a sinologist, author, and think tank director with more than twenty years of experience in cross-cultural dialogue between Europe and Asia. He has led research and exchange programs linking scholars and policy experts from Europe, China, and Central/Southeast Asia. A fluent Chinese speaker, he currently teaches in China on sustainability and cultural heritage and has published widely on Chinese everyday culture and language. His recent work focuses on archaeological and philosophical dimensions of the Liangzhu civilisation and its place in comparative world history.

In this new photography workshop, you will learn to take portraits like a professional photographer, working on a series of images about the people of Beijing.

In this workshop, Sean Gallagher will personally help you and guide you to create your own powerful portraits, drawing upon his experiences producing imagery for National Geographic, TIME and Smithsonian Magazine.

We will explore the fascinating Moshikou cultural street and Fahai Temple, making images of the unique people of this area. Sean will show you not only how to make individual images, but also reveal to you how you can make series of portraits that tell a story.

Many people struggle with making portraits of people. You may feel unsure how to approach people, you may be unsure how to frame the image, or even interact with subjects as you take their photo.

This workshop is aimed at amateur photographers who are ready to go beyond taking snapshots. Let Sean show you the true power of photography through learning the art of environmental portraits and photographic storytelling!

Limited to 8 students only. More information can be found here about this workshops and Sean's previous workshops in China: https://gallagher-photo.com/faces-of-beijing-portrait-workshop-november-2025/
