“Jazz, No Ice”

Nancy Jenkinson Brown never dilutes her own performance and always brings strong additions to the mix – as stand-alone instrumentalists, her band members hold their own, in the “Jazz, No Ice” combination they add their own, unique flavour to the delicious cocktail of music. The specialty of, Jazz, No Ice is creating playful renditions of songs you know and love. As a wonderful vocalist and entertainer, NJB leads the group in interpreting Jazz standards and jazz re-workings of tunes by people as diverse as Radiohead, Sia, Rihanna, and The Beatles. Their musicianship is in a class of their own. Their sense of style makes people want to participate. They take utter delight in having live, spontaneous musical conversations using time, melody and rhythm. It makes every show fresh, exciting and engaging. From up tempo swing to dirty down-home blues, you will watch with awe and leave with a smile and a new sense of joy for jazz.

Once you have experienced the tasty treat you’ll always ask for “Jazz, No Ice” feat Nancy Jenkinson Brown, Moreno Donadel, Doug Martin, Dan Callaghan, Matt Parker and Fiach O’Brien.

Happy to announce that one of our favourite ladies will take over our stage for a beautiful music Saturday filled with original compositions!

Canadian born and Beijing based artist Ember Swift started writing songs at the age of nine, stage performing year later and released 12 albums and 1 DVD project since 1996.

Since she fluently speaks Mandarin and once was a student of Chinese language and culture, her music also melds these two traditions. It features lyrics in Mandarin, English and French and the arrangements feature both Western and Eastern instrumentation.

Specifically known for her unique, jazz-influenced guitar playing and elastic vocals, additional styles include folk, jazz, swing, R&B, funk, pop, folk-rock, and blues.

Her band, assembled in Beijing, includes Anthony Vancore from US on the drums, the UK’s Jack Lecomber on bass, Israel’s Yoav Volansky on keys, and China’s Wang Ya Qi on the erhu. They are five people who come from four different parts of the world but who have chosen Beijing as their current homes proving, once again, that Beijing is truly a global magnet.

MADEMOISELLE ET SON ORCHESTRE are six piece band based in Beijing. They are the only group in China offering a unique repertoire of French songs. The band has played since 2004 throughout China in many events for the promotion of French culture and music. Their music is party inspired by Gypsy Jazz: a style invented in France in the 1930s by Stefan Rappelli and Django Reinhardt. Using the Gypsy Jazz style, Mademoiselle et son Orchestre re-invents the classic songs by Piaf, Brassens, Gainsbourg, and many others. Their own tunes are spiced with humours and imaginative lyrics, which bring the audience into the surreal dream world of Mademoiselle ...

Led by Parker Trevathan and Jonathan Heeter, The Beijing Dead have undergone many manifestations over the years. The line-up may have changed, but the Grateful Dead's Music has continually cast a rainbow across the (sometime) smoggy capital cityscape.

For this special performance, bass-player Heeter has assembled a cast of musicians to blend the Dead with the classic LA canyon sounds of the late 60s and early 70s. Expect cosmic country, psychedelic rock, swamp boogie and whisky doused blues as for one night only LA is Dead rock!

This Sunday, we are very happy to welcome back exceptional Japanese keybordist JUNICHI NARUSE on stage on more time for an explosive and wild Jazz Sunday. This time, Naruse will be presenting a compact Jazz trio completed by Dolphin on guitar and Izumi Koga on drums.

Japanese born organist Junichi Naruse has been entertaining Jazz organ fans in his home country for the past 25 years. He established his style by listening to great organists, selecting compositions from his idols such as Jimmy Smith, Don Patterson, and Larry Young for this recording session. He visited Mumbai, India Nov 2013 to perform at the JusJazz Festival and recorded this first CD "Acha". Because Junichi also loves Hindustani music, he also made good collaborations with Hindustani musicians and/or compositions. In this recording, you can listen to the sitar, sarod, tabla and a traditional Indian vocal. Besides, he recorded a second album in Shimonoseki, Japan, called "Talkin".

Come to meet Mr. Naruse at Modernista this Sunday!

Please, also remember that Sunday jazz is aimed to be quietly listen to, and the artists will appreciate that you keep a moderate tone of voice while the performance last.
