SERGE TEYSSOT-GAY will perform is very last performance in Beijing. STG is a legendary French musician as the former guitarist & co-founder of the most famous French rock band: NOIR DESIR. As part of this band, he recorded two albums with Nick Sansano (Sonic Youth) / Ted Niceley (Fugazi) and toured all over the world. His solo career receives relatively little mainstream attention outside France/Europe, however the international alternative scene recognizes him as one of the most creative guitarists of our times, his talent comparable to such masters as Marc Ribot, Jim O’Rourke, Nels Cline, Fred Frith, Bill Frisell, etc. At present, he is engaged in eight different projects, including world music, hip-hop, free jazz, avant-garde, improvisation, often combined with art, film and dance. STG is unique and he is coming to China on his « Journey to the East » in Search of New Horizons.

Many are called, but the chosen are The Jessica Stuart Few. Simply put, when you’re the only koto-playing indie soul-jazz singer-songwriter in the west (the koto is a traditional Japanese 13-stringed instrument) whose trademark red hair and genre-bending dancefloor grooves have taken you on multiple tours throughout Asia and Australia, despite being Vancouver born and a Toronto native, you’re bound to raise an eyebrow (or 2000?) with your new album, The Passage. As an inventive genre-bending triple threat composer, guitarist, vocalist and contributor to the works of fellow nouveau musical innovators (e.g. Stuart sings back-up vocals on the forthcoming album by Polaris Prize and Juno Award-winning throat singer Tanya Tagaq featuring The Element Choir), shape shifting almost becomes necessary. Over the last three years Stuart has won Best Album award designations at the international IMA's (Independent Music Awards) and was the runner up in Harbourfront Centre's Soundclash Awards, among other accolades.

Meridian Space welcomes two multifaceted sound artists and musicians: Nicolás Melmann and Qu Qiufan. Both artists’ works are characterized by intertwined experimental/melodic compositions, soft vocals, electronic glitch beats, effects and the inclusion of a wide variety of musical instruments’ sound.

Melmann will be debuting in Beijing as part of his tour through Asia. So save the date for a hypnotic plethora of dream-inducing sound.

About the artists

Melmann

Melmann is the solo project of Nicolas Melmann, a Buenos Aires based artist, graduate in Electro Acoustic Composition (Quilmes University). He combines different musical dimensions -as sound artist- by using electronics with acoustic instruments, always innovating in his compositions, making test formats, exploring different sounds, resources and instruments.

Walking between experimentation and melody his music is nocturnal and introspective. On his live performances, he is one man orchestra, playing electronics (beat box, kaoss pad, loop station and computers) with acoustic instruments (ukulele, melódica, hang drum, harp, tiny percussion etc.) mixing them with live process, field recordings and text, all at the same time.

Since 2006 he has been developing a media project combining sounds with images and textworking with VJS, generating a mix between these elements, looking for a conceptual and discursive unity between them.

In the field of sound art, he has undertaken several projects, working as a curator in the series of concerts "Lenguajes Sonoros", which focus in different languages and expressions through sound, held at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Mar del Plata MAR during the 2015, just to mention one of his several projects.

Melmann has performed a great number of solo shows on local stages in Buenos Aires as well as in International festivals such as roBOT Festival (Italy - Usina del Arte), Panoramica, among others. He has also shared the stage with international artists such as Neon Indian (US), Function (DE), and Robert Lippok (DE) Matias Aguayo (DE) Lydia Lunch (NY), among others.

Melmann also works producing music for television, film, theater and installations.

Qu Qiufan (瞿秋繁)

Qiufan has always been interested in artistic expression and communication. Making art is the ultimate way to achieve the two goals. He started his experience in related to music and arts seriously in 2009. While studying philosophy at the college, he also took private lessons in harmony and composition with Aya Nishina. After studying at Berklee, he shifted from solely composing classical music to electronic music productions and multi-disciplinary works in which he explores the texture of the sound and the relation of the sound and space. These elements are also embodied in his independent music production works.

Qiufan's inspirations are the aesthetic of plain, simple but elegant; eastern philosophical disposition expressed through the chaotic, fragmented and noisy contemporary context. The subjects include nostalgia, serenity, irony, cynical and mischievous matters. His main works are acoustic-electronic music that employs female vocal ensemble and synthetic sounds.

His works include soundscapes, sound installations, indie music productions, and scorings for motion pictures.

As part of the performance, artist Tian Sicong’s —田思聪—video piece Simulacra will be screened.

Anoraak first appeared in 2008 with the underground classic Nightdrive With You. Two albums and a whole bunch of remixes later (Neon Indian, Mika, College, Metronomy, Pacific!...) he is today a reference in the synthwave and indie-dance genres.

After years on the road behind the DJ desks or front stage singing and playing his music live, he's back with a new EP FIGURE, including the acclaimed track We Lost featuring LA's Slow Shiver suave vocals, premiered on major music media Dancing Astronaut.

"The perfect balance between the unique melodic sense of Anoraak and the beautiful voice of Slow Shiver, a beautiful romantic hit" College

The cover is an artwork by renowned director Jesse Salto, and the track We Lost has been remixed by Brooklyn's producer LEFTI.

"A memorable ballad that yearns to be listened to over and over again" Dancing Astronaut

His new live show is a solo act, surfing smartly between a vocal / instrumental performance and a modern eletronic live set built for the dancefloor.
