Pierre Pradat is one of the most requested musicians established in China. He has played thousands of shows all over the country at the greatest venues for more than a decade after relocating from France, including many for some of the top Chinese pop stars and movie directors. He is a highly versatile and creative artist, cultivating a mainstream jazz piano style balancing elegant lyrism and virtuosic energy with a great sense of swing. He is also specialized in playing Rhodes electric piano and analog synthesizers, and is very open-minded on other genre like Funk and Electronica. His main influences to name a few are Kenny Barron, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett. Truly, finding a suitable theme for our upcoming East Palace West Palace edition wasn’t all that easy this time. As our following is unequivocally growing, we feel increasingly more committed to challenge parochial sites of queer representation. This means that we won’t cease to emphasize the political implications of our project. It ain’t all glitter and drama huney. Instead we hope to investigate the unconscious biases instilled in our collective psyche by the archaic norms of society. We want to transcend queer cultural traditions but also reflect its established histories. What do we mean?

A few editions ago it came to our attention that there was a note of disatisfaction about the fact that our DJs often play soulful, vocal-oriented House or Disco music. We are aware that this is the DNA of recognised archetypes in queer culture. If something like ‘vernacular queerness’ exists then this is best epitomized by the subcultural environs of 1970s Chicago or New York. We are aware that queer culture goes far beyond such archetypes.

The world is like a dream of true and false
Intertwined with countless pain and joy
In the crevices of the bizarre world
The strange girl weaves a strange fantasy with musical notes
Tarot cards for divination dreams are ready
The door to the fairy tale world is slowly opening
Someone at the end of the sky is chanting ancient ballads
The boundary between dream and reality is gradually blurred

What is real?
What is an illusion?
Indulge in the ethereal voice of shallow singing and low chanting
Maybe you already have the answer in your mind
